Doug Soles, the head of the cross country program and distance coach at Herriman High in Utah after winning 14 California Division 1 state titles and the 2015 Nike Cross Nationals boys championship at Great Oak High in California, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss his return to cross country coaching Aug. 13 at the Premier Invitational at the Cottonwood Complex in Salt Lake City, with the Mustangs winning the boys varsity competition by placing five athletes in the top 10, including seniors William Horne and Noah Jenkins taking the top two spots. Soles, a teacher in the Jordan District in Utah who had not coached since March 2021 at Great Oak, reveals how he asked to take over training the distance athletes in February for the track season, only days before the outdoor schedule began. He outlines building a new coaching staff at Herriman after several years working with Daniel Noble at Great Oak, including his wife Teresa, along with Lexi Hopkin and Josh Pugel, in addition to coaching his sophomore son Jordan. Soles also expresses gratitude for the support of the administration at Herriman and how significant that is in building a successful program. He analyzes the benefits of inheriting a veteran boys roster with several seniors, including Ryland Garner, Luke Briggs and Carson Monsivais, along with Horne and Jenkins, in addition to having junior William Steadman and sophomore Tayshaun Ogomo to be able to rely on for future success, in addition to rebuilding the girls roster following the graduation of 6A state champion Addi Bruening, now a freshman at BYU. Soles reflects on the rivalries Great Oak had with elite programs in California such as Newbury Park, Buchanan and Saugus, and explains how he looks forward to facing new challenges in the Utah 6A classification against leading contenders Riverton, American Fork, Skyridge, Corner Canyon and Farmington. He examines the potential to not only win the 6A boys state title Oct. 25, but also to perform well Nov. 19 at NXR Southwest in Arizona and possibly qualify for Nike Cross Nationals on Dec. 3 in Oregon. Soles also speaks about his return Sept. 16 to California, when Herriman will travel to the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Presented by ASICS at Great Park in Irvine, and the opportunity to compete against Great Oak in the sweepstakes race.
