Sean McGorty, a professional athlete with Nike Bowerman Track Club and the NACAC gold medalist in the 10,000 meters in the Bahamas after winning the 2014 NACAC Under-20 cross country 6-kilometer title in Trinidad and Tobago, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss his victory Aug. 19 at the Grand Bahamas Sports Complex in Freeport that earned him the World Athletics qualifying standard for next year's global meet in Hungary. McGorty, 27, reflects on his first international experience representing the United States eight years ago and how it has continued to motivate him throughout his career at Stanford and professionally for Bowerman. He shares how meaningful it was to have Bowerman teammates Evan Jager, Woody Kincaid and Josh Thompson all competing in the Bahamas, and how excited McGorty was to also see Jager win gold in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to also achieve the World Athletics qualifying standard. McGorty examines the road to recovery for Jager during the past four years to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in July, along with NACAC, and how much it has inspired the Bowerman group. He also explains his own rehabilitation from surgery on his left Achilles last year after another Haglund's diagnosis and how proud McGorty is to qualify for his first World Athletics Championships in the 10,000 and secure 12th place July 17 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., along with winning NACAC gold. McGorty also analyzes the American record in the 5,000 meters achieved Sept. 2 in Brussels by teammate Grant Fisher, who clocked 12:46.96, and looks ahead to him racing again Sept. 9 in the Diamond League final in Zurich. He also speaks about Fisher's consistency and achieving four American records in one year, in addition to McGorty producing the No. 10 all-time U.S. 10,000 effort of 27:18.15 and running a personal-best 3:54.51 on Aug. 5 at Sir Walter Miler in Raleigh, N.C. McGorty also assesses the recent transition of Nike Bowerman Track Club coaches Jerry Schumacher and Shalane Flanagan to taking over the Oregon program, and what it is going to be like to train in Eugene when the group reunites in the fall. He shares his anticipation for reuniting with former Stanford teammates, as well as coaches Chris Miltenberg and Dylan Sorensen (both now at University of North Carolina), on Sept. 9-10 at the Blue Ridge Relay, along with expressing his gratitude for being able to spend time in Virginia with family and friends.
