Nicole Warwick, a sixth-year competitor at Azusa Pacific and the reigning NCAA Division 2 indoor pentathlon champion, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the Cougars pursuing another women's team title May 25-27 at the Division 2 outdoor championship meet in Pueblo, Colo. Warwick is scheduled to compete in the heptathlon, along with the long jump and 100-meter hurdles. She ranks No. 8 in Division 2 history in the indoor pentathlon at 4,066 points, along with No. 14 in the heptathlon with 5,640 points and No. 19 in the long jump at 20-9.25 (6.33m). Warwick also boasts a wind-aided mark of 20-10.75 (6.37m). Warwick revisits winning the 2021 Division 2 team championship at Grand Valley State, and how Azusa Pacific has 14 female athletes entered across 23 events for this year's meet at CSU Pueblo. She examines how the unselfish approach of the Azusa Pacific competitors has resulted in French athlete Esther Conde-Turpin, who ranks No. 2 in Division 2 history in the heptathlon with 6,007 points, competing instead in the long jump, high jump, javelin, 100 hurdles and 4x400 relay, with Alysa Henry entered in the heptathlon and javelin and Luisa Fischer scheduled to compete in the heptathlon, along with the high jump and javelin. Warwick explains how significant the experience is on the Azusa Pacific roster, and how valuable it has been to have Jaylah Walker, the 2021 champion in the 400 hurdles, competing in another outdoor season for the Cougars. She also expresses gratitude for the Azusa Pacific coaching staff, especially head coach Jack Hoyt, and analyzes how impactful the addition of Mike Powell has been this year in improving Warwick's long jump. Warwick speaks about her ambition to return to compete for the Cougars for a seventh year and one final outdoor season in 2024, and her goal to compete at the Olympic Trials. She also shares how meaningful it would be to become the first Azusa Pacific female athlete to capture a Division 2 crown in either the heptathlon or long jump, and the challenges of competing at 4,600 feet elevation in Colorado for the first time in her career.
