Winston Schroder, an incoming freshman at IMG Academy in Florida representing Iron Wood Track Club in Idaho, rallied from a 117-point deficit entering the 1,500 meters to win the boys 13-14 division pentathlon title with 2,870 points at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Schroder ran 15.35 in the 110-meter hurdles, achieved a shot put mark of 42-3.25 (12.88m), cleared 5-3 (1.60m) in the high jump, produced a 17-7 (5.36m) long jump and ran a lifetime-best 4:49.20 in the 1,500 to edge James Hawkins, Jr. with 2,865 points. Schroder lowered his 1,500 time by nearly 30 seconds to surpass Hawkins, Jr., who clocked 5:10.55.
