Cordell Tinch, the fastest all-conditions competitor in the men's 110-meter hurdles in collegiate history with his wind-aided performance May 27 of 12.87 seconds representing Pittsburg State at the NCAA Division 2 Outdoor Championships in Pueblo, Colo., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss representing the United States as a professional athlete Aug. 20-21 in his debut at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Tinch, 23, decided to forgo his remaining eligibility at Pittsburg State and sign with Doyle Management Group ahead of the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships, where he finished second July 9 in the 110 hurdles final in a wind-legal 13.08 seconds at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. He is also the No. 2 wind-legal competitor in the world this year with a 12.96 effort June 23 at the Trackwired Arkansas Grand Prix in Fayetteville, in addition to being the all-conditions global leader. Tinch reflects on Pittsburg State coaches Kyle Rutledge and Jesse Miller believing he could qualify to compete at Worlds as early as February, despite Tinch not competing for nearly three years before arriving in Kansas. He examines the decision not to compete again in between the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships and racing in Budapest, instead focusing on training and remaining healthy, instead of traveling to Europe to race as an unsponsored athlete at Diamond League and Continental Tour events. Tinch expresses gratitude to his family and coaches, along with his teammates for their support throughout the year, in addition to being proud to have the opportunity to represent Green Bay, Wis., on the global stage. He analyzes the potential for the American quartet of two-time World champion Grant Holloway, along with reigning U.S. title holder Daniel Roberts, Freddie Crittenden III and Tinch to all advance to the Aug. 21 final and the potential for the American men to sweep the 110 hurdles podium against Jamaican challengers Rasheed Broadbell and defending Olympic champion Hansle Parchment. Tinch also explores the possibility of competing in Diamond League meets in Europe following Worlds in an effort to conclude his summer Sept. 16-17 at the Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field, which is hosting the Diamond League final for the first time.
