Jorinde van Klinken, a Dutch standout and three-time NCAA Division 1 champion in the women's discus throw at Arizona State and Oregon as well as an indoor shot put winner for the Sun Devils in 2022, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in both the discus and shot put at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The discus qualifying is Aug. 20, with the final scheduled for Aug. 22, and the shot put preliminary competition and championship are both being held Aug. 26. She boasts a personal-best 230-5 (70.22m) effort in the discus, which achieved the collegiate record in 2021 in Tucson, in addition to van Klinken, 23, producing a top all-time indoor collegiate shot put mark of 64-2.50 (19.57m) in February in New Mexico. Her best outdoor shot put performance is 62-5 (19.02m) from the NCAA Division 1 West Regional in May in Sacramento. She revisits placing fourth in the discus at last year's World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., in addition to reflecting on her Diamond League competitions this year in Italy, Norway and Sweden, and how those experiences have helped in her preparation to again contend for a medal in Budapest. She also recaps how challenging the schedule was during the NCAA postseason and balancing graduation, along with international competitions, in addition to travel, and learning to manage her physical, emotional and mental health and energy as best as possible for each event. She speaks about collaborating remotely with Oregon throws coach Brian Blutreich, in addition to van Klinken receiving guidance from her former high school coach while training in the Netherlands. She shares her pride in having 24-year-old Jessica Schilder and 21-year-old Alida van Daalen from Florida also competing in the shot put for the Netherlands in Budapest. Following the World Athletics Championships, van Klinken speaks about her ambition to qualify for the Diamond League final in one or both events and having the opportunity to return to Hayward Field to compete Sept. 16-17 at the Prefontaine Classic for her only home meet of the year. She also analyzes Oregon moving to the Big Ten Conference and Arizona State heading to the Big 12 Conference following the 2023-24 school year as part of the ongoing realignment in collegiate athletics, namely for football.
