Courtney Wayment, a professional athlete representing On Running and a Brigham Young graduate who is the No. 3 all-time American competitor in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:09.91 along with one of 31 female athletes in global history to run sub-9:10, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Aug. 23 in the opening round at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Wayment, 25, reached the final at last year's World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., placing 12th overall. She examines her preparation and build up to race in Budapest this year in comparison to the schedule last year coming off her final collegiate season competing for BYU. Wayment explains how significant and meaningful it has been to be an American teammate the past two years with New Balance competitor Emma Coburn, who is making her 11th career appearance at a global meet, along with HOKA Northern Arizona Elite first-year professional athlete Krissy Gear, the reigning U.S. champion in the 3,000 steeplechase. She reflects on running 9:11.41 on June 2 at the Diamond League event in Florence, Italy, as well as clocking 9:17.21 in her final race before Budapest at the London Athletics Meeting on July 23, achieving her highest career performance in a Diamond League race. Wayment speaks about the lessons she learned, as well as her coach Diljeet Taylor, from last year's global final, and how much that has helped in her preparation this year. She also shares how valuable it has been to train with former BYU teammates and fellow professional athletes Whittni Morgan and Anna Camp-Bennett in Provo, Utah. Wayment also expresses gratitude for the opportunity to represent On Running, and how excited she has been to witness the growth in the sport of the Swiss brand in recent years. She also looks forward to competing in additional events after the World Athletics Championships, just like she did last year racing in Monaco and achieving her personal best. Wayment also shares her inspiration and motivation to qualify for the Diamond League final and the opportunity to be able to race again Sept. 16-17 at Hayward Field as part of the Prefontaine Classic. She also looks forward to BYU being part of the Big 12 Conference in the upcoming 2023-24 school year, in addition to revisiting her experiences competing in the West Coast Conference for cross country and contributing to the Cougars' legacy during her NCAA career.
