Sam Mattis, a Nike professional athlete, two-time Olympian and a member of every U.S. national team since 2019, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Aug. 5 in the men's discus throw qualifying round in Paris. Mattis, 30, won the 2015 NCAA Division 1 title for Penn and has captured a pair of U.S. national championships in 2019 and 2023, in addition to achieving a lifetime-best 225-4 (68.69m) in 2022. He reflects on earning eighth place in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics with a mark of 209-7 (63.88m) and the contrast in the energy in the stadium as a result of the restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mattis shares the learning experiences from competing in Tokyo, in addition to World Athletics Championships in 2019 in Doha, 2022 in Oregon and last year in Budapest, and how those competitions have benefited him in preparation to throw in Paris. He also shares how meaningful it will be to have family members in attendance in Paris after them not being able to travel to watch Mattis compete three years ago in Tokyo. Mattis revisits receiving a testicular cancer diagnosis in November 2022 and how he went into remission after three months and was able to recover in time in an effort to not only win the U.S. title last year, but also finish 15th at the World Championships. He expresses gratitude for the support of coach Dane Miller at Garage Strength, in addition to fellow throwers and training partners, and how impactful they have been throughout his professional career. Mattis explains how significant it is to train with Alex Rose from Samoa, in addition to how inspiring it is to have women's discus throw star Yaime Perez, the 2019 World Championships gold medalist and Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, as part the Garage Strength group, as well as Nigerian Olympian Chioma Onyekwere. He also examines the depth of the men's discus field in Paris, including three of the top five competitors in global history in world record-holder Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania, plus Daniel Stahl of Sweden and Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia, who were the World Championships medalists in Budapest. Mattis also speaks about having U.S. champion Andrew Evans and Joseph Brown as teammates, and analyzes the potential for all three American competitors to advance to the Aug. 7 final in Paris.
