Teagan Zwaanstra, a senior at ThunderRidge High in Colorado and Stanford signee, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing April 9-10 representing Steadfast Academy Track Club in the women's open/unattached/club section at the NIKE Chandler Rotary Invitational in Arizona. Zwaanstra, a 2019 Colorado 5A state champion in the 800-meter sprint medley relay for ThunderRidge with Leah Prochazka, Anna Hart and Kylie Bahr, expresses gratitude for the opportunity to not only compete closer to sea level, but also against elite competition ahead of the official May 3 start of the Colorado High School Activities Association outdoor track and field season, which is scheduled to conclude June 26. She reflects on her opportunities to participate in both the Virginia Showcase and adidas indoor nationals, both at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, and her praise for the facility and the quality of the track. She reminisces about her past experiences competing at the Great Southwest Classic indoor and outdoor meets in Albuquerque, N.M., and how participating at the NIKE Chandler Rotary Invitational reminds her of those elite events. Zwaanstra examines the past year training with Markus Miller and her Steadfast Academy teammates, and how she has benefited in both the sprinting and jumping events, as she hopes to improve on her personal-best efforts of 11.76 in the 100-meter dash, 24.87 in the 200 and 19-7 in the long jump this year. She reveals how Miller has helped her become a more technical jumper, in addition to learning from being surrounded by an impressive group of athletes during workouts. Zwaanstra shares her excitement to be attending Stanford with fellow Colorado standouts Camille Peisner of Valor Christian and Taylor James of Niwot, in addition to celebrating the recent women's basketball national title, along with the return of the Stanford Invitational track and field meet April 2-3 to Cobb Track and Angell Field. She also speaks about her desire to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering and her anticipation for attending school in Palo Alto.
