2025 ILXCTF Cross Country Previews - IHSA Class 3A Girls Teams
By Michael Newman
Could this year top what happened at Detweiller Park last November when the top three teams were separated by two points the closest IHSA State Meet History. St. Ignatius College Prep was dominant last fall winning the Class 2A title but will not be able to defend since the school was moved to Class 3A for at least this fall. St. Ignatius College Prep could become the first school to win a state championship in two classes over two years. Defending state champion Barrington is rated close to the 2A champs. Mia Sirois is recovering from a slight injury and be ready to go with a good Fillies team. York finished second one point behind Barrington. They did not have a good track season and has worked hard this summer to be ready for the start. Batavia will be a team contending for a state title along with a young but good Naperville North team.
Here is a look at the top teams in Class 3A along with some teams to watch for this season..
1 – Chicago St. Ignatius College Prep Coach – Matt Haffner 2024 Finish – 1st, 2A State Girls Catholic Athletic Conference
Runners – Annika Swan SR, Allison Shutler SO, Greta Sheaffer SO, Elle Sheaffer JR, Aurora Steinhofer SO, Olivia Brophy SO, Katherine McAllister SR, Ella Kueker SO, Gabrielle Duque SR, Pilar Curran SR
Preview – The Wolfpack finally got to the top of the mountain last fall with a convincing race and state title in the Class 2A race. Six runners are back and ready to compete in Class 3A, their new home for at least 2025. They will look to be the first school to try to win a state title in consecutive years in different classifications. It is possible for St. Ignatius Prep to achieve this. “This is one of my first teams where a large number of girls really want to make the starting lineup,” said Coach Matt Haffner. “They are running as a large pack whenever we get together for a run.”
The team returns three all-state runners from last fall. Annika Swan is one of the most elite runners in the state after she finished second in the 2A race. She came back strong in the spring winning state titles in the 3A 800 Meter Run and the 3A 1600 Meter Run. Allison Shutler had a breakout track season after placing ninth last fall and then finishing second in both the 3200 and the 1600. Greta Sheaffer finished 23rd last fall. Elle Sheaffer did not have her best race at state last fall as she collapsed 100 meters left in the race. She did have good races last fall and should be near her sister in races this fall. Aurora Steinhofer ran 18:11 at state and should again be a runner in the top five. This roster is deep in talent so we could see up to ten runners challenging for seven spots.
“Our top four returnees had strong track seasons. Annika and Allison had performances that are widely known,” added Haffner. “Greta PR'ed in all her events, as did her sister Elle. Aurora was training with the Sheaffers during the indoor season before transitioning to soccer.” The Wolfpack could be the top team in the state this fall. We have to remember how deep Class 3A this year is again. We could come down to the same scenario we saw last fall.
2 – Barrington Coach – Debbie Revolta 2024 Finish – 1st, 3A State Mid Suburban League
Runners – Mia Sirois JR, Victoria Tarara SO, Abby Lewis SR, Angelica Hil JR, Paige Kusmerz SO, Madison Miles SR, Charlotte Luft JR, Liva Ketkar JR, Cece Babel FR, Hannah Forbes FR, Ashley Forbes FR.
Preview – It took a little while (close to 15 minutes) before the Fillies won the 3A title. It was their second state title in the program’s history. IT was their first state title since 2003. Three runners are back from their championship team. Their seventh runner from last year, Georgia Storms, moved out of state. “One thing that stood out this summer was the returning girls from last year’s team (plus some others) all went to Colorado for a week of running and fun,” said their Coach Deb Revolta. “It was a good team bonding trip that brought them all closer together.”
One other thing that happened at that camp is that their defending state champion Mia Sirios suffered a slight stress fracture in her ankle according to Revolta. She has crossed train to get herself ready for this fall. “Mia should be out of her boot soon,” Revolta added. “She has been cross training so hopefully that is helping.”
Victoria Tarara had a great track season and will be in line to be one of the top runners on this team. Abby Lewis was the team’s sixth runner at state just five seconds behind Tarara. “Abby Lewis, Angelica Hil, Victoria Tarara and Madison Miles have all made great strides over the last 8 months,” Revolta said. “Each of them had a great track season and they have been motivated to keep it going. They know that consistency is the key to running fast times, but they also understand that it's a long season and we want to see a steady progression going into the post season.” Also watch for three freshmen Cece Babel along with Hannah and Ashleigh Forbes that might contribute immediately.
3 – Elmhurst York Coach – Lauren DeAngelis 2024 Finish – 2nd, 3A State West Suburban Silver Conference
Runners – Karlin Janowski SO, Sophia Galiano-Sanchez SR, Molly McGreal SR (transfer from Trinity), Maggie Quinn SR, Lila Stanley SR, Julia Wessloh JR, Paige Byrne SR, Stella Rosso JR, Claire Twohy FR
Preview – York came close to winning another state title missing by one point to finish second just behind Barrington. Their distance squad did not have their best running during the track season, and it showed in May. Five runners are back from last year’s state team focused on what is ahead. “We have had a strong and positive summer with a focus on reestablishing a strong aerobic base,” said Coach Lauren DeAngelis. “All the girls are feeling stronger, both physically and mentally, going into our next phase of training while reconnecting as a 2025 group. Their work ethic and positivity towards the training and their teammates this summer was great momentum going into the season.”
Karlin Janowski was nearly unstoppable last fall finishing second at state. Her only losses during the IHSA season was to Mia Sirois. A so-so track season has he refocused heading into fall. “Karlin has worked tirelessly to build her aerobic base and strengthen her mental aspect of the sport,” added DeAngelis. “She has been extremely consistent and will not use her experience to push herself this season.” Sophia Galiano-Sanchez broke out in xc last fall finishing 17th. “Sophia is ready to make a huge impact for this varsity squad lead by experience and a deep desire to perform at a high level,” said DeAngelis.
Molly McGreal had trained in the York summer program for the past two years. She decided to attend York transferring from Trinity. McGreal was all-state in Class 2A in both her sophomore and junior seasons. She will play a big part in the team’s top seven. Maggie Quinn will be a part of the top five again this year. Lila Stanley, Julia Wesloh, and Stella Rosso are runners to keep an eye on. Last spring’s setback have challenged this team heading into fall. York has won state titles (2021, 2023) and finished second (2022, 2024). It is an odd numbered year. Perhaps York will have their hands on a state title trophy in November?
4 – Batavia Coach – Chad Hillman 2024 Finish – 5th, 3A State DuKane Conference
Runners – Avery Hacker JR, Madeline Cassidy SR, Gwen Krodel JR, Claire Deppe JR, Halle Hillman SO, Chloe Kammes SR, Sara Wolfe SO, Nora Koziol SR, Kylie McDougall SO, Reese Knysak FR, Morgan Merritt FR, Riley Eifrid FR.
Preview – The Bulldogs came close in that tight 2024 finish where they finished fifth overall but missing a trophy by 16 points. This is a deep roster with up to twelve runners fighting for seven spots. This November, Batavia could be heading home with a trophy especially with the work they have done over the summer. “We have some dedicated seniors who look for opportunities to lead,” said Batavia Coach, Chad Hillman. “We also showed that we have some non-seniors who are willing and eager to step up and lead in a variety of ways.”
One of those runners is their top runner Avery Hacker who finished eighth in last year’s state race. The junior dropped her times on the track all-state in the 3200 with a 10:43.96 time to finish eighth. “Avery continues to show that she has room for improvement,” added Hillman. “I am impressed with her willingness and determination to find ways to get better. That determination has helped her to improve every season that she's competed.” Madeline Cassidy was all-state last fall finishing 21st and should take another step up this fall. Gwen Krodel and Claire Deppe finished among the top 50 and will have their eyes on higher finishes. Halle Hillman had a great summer of training and could step into the team’s top five. “Halle has improved enormously every season that she's competed in cross country going back to 6th grade,” said her coach and father. “She continues to search and find new levels and is challenging herself to be a top tier racer on our team.”
This team could be a trophy team especially from what we saw last season. It will be tough with the number of quality teams in Class 3A to get into trophy talk. This squad has the stuff to accomplish many things this fall. “We've battled through a couple of non-running related injuries at the beginning of the summer to get to this point,” stated Hillman. “Those girls and this team have made no excuses and will continue to come in every day to get better. As is every year, we're looking forward to continuing the journey of building this group of girls into a team.”
5 – Naperville North Coach – Dan Iverson 2024 Finish, 7th, 3A State DuPage Valley Conference
Runners – Rianna Tandon SR, Shania Tandon SR, Kathryn Rohr SO, Alex Pobozny SO, Chloe Piot, JR, Elaina White JR, Georgia Karstens SO, Thain Karr SR, Raegan Bryam SO, Sonia Kazmierczak FR.
Preview – This is a young team that could end their season with a trophy. The Huskies finished seventh in last year’s race and return five runners from that team. “The team showed up in large numbers and ran a lot,” said Coach Dan Iverson. “They had larger numbers running faster paces than we have seen in a few years, so it was good to see.”
The track season did not end the way that Rianna and Shania Tandon wanted. A concentrated focus by the two seniors has paid off in a big way for this team. Rianna finished 23rd as a sophomore in 2023, and 15th in last year’s race. Shania was 15th in her 2023 sophomore state race and 24th in last year’s race.” “Shania and Rianna are both evolving well as leaders and in great shape,” said Iverson. “They really have made building a strong team a priority this year. Both learned a lot from their successes and challenges in the last year to put themselves in a position to be an effective leader today.”
The remaining top five spots could be interchangeable with 5-7 runners challenging for top five spots. Kathryn Rohr was the team’s fourth runner last year and will lead the pack. Chloe Piot, Georgia Karstens, Elaina White, and Thain Karr are some of the runners we could see challenging for a top five spot. A thing to watch for is the spread between the Tandon sisters will need to go down. Remember last year there were three runners up front separated by just 15 seconds, then 48 seconds spread before their fourth. This year, there is projected to be a 34 second spread between the two Tandon sisters and the third runner, then a 33 second spread between their third through fifth runners. The state spread was 74 seconds. Those formulas could get the Huskies onto the state trophy discussion.
6 – Plainfield North Coach – Andrew Derks 2024 Finish – 16th, 3A State Southwest Prairie Conference
Runners – Marlie Czarniewski JR, Tessa Russo SR, Emaan Hussain SR, Zeta Zbroszczyk SR, Kate Beavers FR, Laurel Eager FR, Olivia Eager FR, Ayla Czarniewski JR, Madeline Singh JR, Megan Morris JR, Aven Thomas SO (from track). Ireland Hockman SO.
Preview – It seemed that the Tigers were on the verge of cracking the circle of teams that would be going after some of the trophy contending teams. Injuries and illness slowed Plainfield North down the stretch where they finished 16th. Six runners are back from that state team.
North has two runners that should again be all-state runners Tessa Russo (10th) and Marlie Czarniewski (25th). “The thing that has stood out the most is the development of our "2nd pack" of girls,” said their coach, Andrew Derks. “Everyone knows Tessa and Marlie and they will be strong up front for us, but it's the next group that will determine our team success. I've seen a new willingness to elevate training from several of them that wasn't there in the past.” It might be Marlie Czarniewski the runner that makes even a larger jump in track when she ran 10:31 in the 3200 Meter Run during the season and then helped North finish second in the 4x8 with a 2:16.6 split. She has the range to join the state big guns this fall. “Marlie has elevated to a new level in her training, and I'm excited to see what she can do,” said Derks. “She lost her #1 training partner when her sister Elsie graduated, so she has adjusted to more solo running and running with coaches or guys teammates. She will be a total beast this season. I think she can run with anyone in the state. I would also say her twin sister Ayla has really elevated her training as well and is way ahead of where she has been in the past. She will be much improved this year and a likely top 5 runner for us.”
Tessa Russo will be ready to go after a track season that lasted to the end of June. She was the team’s top runner at stage and hungry for this fall. “Tessa may not be quite where she wants to be coming off running at Nike Outdoor Nationals and then getting sick to start the summer, she has really emerged as an incredible leader for our girls team. She is starting to heat up here at the end of the summer, and she has the talent to beat just about anyone when healthy and when she has consistent training.”
Emaan Hussain is on the verge of taking the next step up where she could lead this pack moving herself into the 17-minute range. Freshman Kate Beavers had a good race at Detweiller at the end of July and might find her way in the top five along with Ayla Czarniewski and Zeta Zbroszczyk. A surprise could be Aven Thomas, who is out for the team for the first time. She was excellent for the Tigers in their relays. She ran distances in middle school which might translate to big things over the next couple of months.
The improvement of the ‘pack’ is something to watch the opening meets of the season. “I really have no idea how good our girls team can be, it's a new-look team and each week someone else surprises,” added Derks. “Our girls have been in a unique position these past 2 years when we combined programs getting to be along the ride with our guys team's success. I know they are happy for the guys, but also eager to climb the ranks themselves and put our girls program "on the map". The team culture is also really improving and that's helping girls run with more confidence I think. When girls start running for something more than themselves and truly supporting each other, it shows in how they race and train. It's a fun team to coach, and we love seeing how they have come together more than ever this summer.”
7 – Edwardsville Coach – George Patrylak 2024 Finish – 8th, 3A State Southwestern Conference
Runners – Madison Popelar SR, Morgan Popelar SO, Willow Jackson SO, Ella Thompson JR, Antonella DeAvila SR, Reagan Jumper SO, Ava Horsfall JR, Mackenna Kerpan FR, Alli Merrick FR, Kate Lopper FR, Clara Johnson FR
Preview – A team that should not be discounted this fall. The Tigers return their entire top seven from a team that finished eighth in the state meet. “We had a lot of girls coming off injuries during track, including our top two returners,” said Coach George Patrylak. “We also have a very large freshmen class. I emphasized two things this summer: team bonding and building a foundation. I really like the way this team appears to get along. This is important, as we return all seven runners who competed at State, but we also have a very talented freshmen class. We may not be as fit to start the season as I would like, but I am excited about the chemistry and potential of this team. Last year we should have the depth that we were slightly lacking this year.”
Madison and Morgan Popelar crossed the line together at the state meet running 17:36. Willow Jackson finished just four seconds behind giving the Tigers a formable group in the front that could all move this fall into all-state positions. “Madison and Morgan were two runners that missed a lot of time in the spring,” added Patrylak. “They have slowly been building up. Due to their competitiveness, I believe they will be our top two runners this year. I think the pack will be closer to them during the start of the season, but I hope they will return to form by mid-year. I think Willow Jackson will benefit from having the Popelars back, as she seemed to have a lot of success last year when she focused on running with her teammates.”
A key is closing the gap of the rest of the top seven to the big three will be something to watch in changing this team from a top 10 team to a trophy contending group. The spread in their sectional race was 72 seconds. At state, that spread was 42 seconds. The quartet of Ella Thompson, Antonella DeAvila, Reagan Jumper, and Ava Horsfall all could be in the top five and close that gap. Patrylak has a good group of freshmen that could contribute at some point this season. “At the end of last season, we made school history, finishing in 8th place in 3A,” Patrylak concluded. On paper, we return all 7 runners from that team, plus have a talented freshmen class. I don't think we will start the season showing that we are as strong. During the past few seasons, the girls have seemed to start the season off slowly, but progress at the end. We are hoping for another strong late October and early November. This team has potential. I hope they can reach it.
8 – Minooka Coach – Kevin Gummerson 2024 Finish – 6th, 3A State Southwest Prairie Conference
Runners – Natalie Nahs JR, Clara Getsoian SO, Melinda Torres SR, Leah Kleckauskas JR, Paige Joachim JR, Kimora Rodely JR, Layla Dobczyk SO, Natalie Andrews JR, Ellie Porath FR
Preview – Minooka will be Minooka again this fall finding themselves in the top 10 and being in the conversation of contending for a trophy. Their state race where they finished sixth. They will miss graduated runners Maya Ledesma and Taya Gummerson. They do have a young group of four runners that have experience to get this team among the best. “This team has been consistent this summer,” said their coach, Kevin Gummerson. “They have learned from the example set by the athletes before them that success can only come if you are putting in the work every single day. This summer, they have done exactly that.”
There are several runners that could be the #1 runner for this team. “I am excited to see how the entire team performs this season,” added Gummerson. “Leah Kleckauskas had some big breakthroughs during track, and the question now is whether she can carry that momentum onto the cross-country course. Natalie Nahs is coming off an excellent track season (All State in 800) and has built on that with a very strong summer of training. Her confidence is high, and she is ready to take on a leadership role. I am also eager to see how Clara Getsoian progresses in her sophomore year. She is a tough multi-sport athlete who had a strong freshman season.”
Melinda Torres was the team’s sixth runner at state and could slide into the team’s top five. Paige Joachim has showed improvement in the first half of the year and could be a difference maker for this team. “She is starting to believe in her ability to run strong in cross country as well,” added Gummerson. Minooka finds a freshman every year that makes their top five. This year it could be Ellie Porath. Gummerson described that she knows how to set goals and the level of work it takes to get there. I won’t be surprised how good this team will be after their first couple meets of the season.
9 – Yorkville Coach – Chris Muth 2024 Finish – 11th, 3A State Southwest Prairie Conference
Runners – Athena Triner SO, Ashley Schrader SR, Mia Evans JR, Nicole Kraus JR, Rachel Rotramel SO, Linden Moss SO, Tess Muth SO, Anya Janovjak SO, Ellie Meyer FR.
Preview – It will be interesting how the first month of the season will fair for Yorkville. Girls Flag football has hit the rosters of some of the teams in the state including the Lady Foxes. “Our team is extremely small this year with the addition of flag football as an option to the girls fall season,” said Chris Muth. “We are a team of about 20 girls which makes our depth extremely limited and thin. We have to focus on staying healthy this season to maximize the girls we do have and that may limit a little of the growth we have seen in season past. I'm extremely excited with the girls we do have and how hard they are working, but expectations may be slightly different this season. They have been consistent in summer training and we look as always to peak in the state series.”
Athena Triner has stepped up during the summer to emerge as the top runner on this team according to Muth. The sophomore finished five seconds behind Ashley Schrader giving this team a strong presence in the front. “Athena this summer as a sophomore has been much more committed to her cross-country training and has limited her other sports commitments to maximize this upcoming season,” added Muth. Linden Moss is another sophomore that has made huge strides in improvement and could also be in the top five. Rachel Rotramel, a sophomore, had some minor setbacks in her training this summer. When healthy, Muth feels she will be a steady contributor in the top five. Ellie Meyer is the top freshman entering the program and should be a contributor to their top group. The name of the game for this team is staying healthy considering how small their roster will be.
10 – Downers Grove North Coach – Tim McDonald 2024 Finish – 3rd, 3A State West Suburban Silver Conference
Runners – Lily Eddington SR, Macy Ermitage SO, Helen Justice SR, Sophia Schlueter JR, Blake Weltler JR, Mairead Courtney JR, Gianna Modica JR, Kayla Solem SR, Evan Vlasic JR, Cora Hulbert SO.
Preview – The Trojans will reload heading into this season losing five runners to graduation after finishing third in the state meet missing the state title by two points. “This team is a very close team,” said their coach, Tim McDonald. “They get along well and they are excited for the season. We have a group of athletes that made some big strides last year in both the fall and spring. Now it is their turn to step up into bigger roles on this team.”
What is yet to be answered is who will step into the rest of their top seven. Helen Justice and Sophie Schlueter have state series experience and should be among the team’s top five. Juniors Blake Weltler, Mairead Courtney, and Gianna Modica are some of the runners we might see rounding out their top seven. McDonald does have a good class of freshman joining the team that might have an influence on the top seven at state series, but it is too early to tell according to their coach. “We have a group of about 8 runners after Macy and Lily that have a lot of ability,” said McDonald. “They have done a great job of getting ready this summer to step into bigger roles this season.”
11 – Arlington Heights Hersey Coach – Mikayla Olsen 2024 Finish – 9th, 3A State Mid Suburban League
Runners – Alexa Izenstark JR, Graceleen Mabry FR, Sofia Donner JR, Alexandra Kopacz JR, Elizabeth Waltz SR, JoJo Messer SO, Zuzuanna Kruszewski SO, Martyna Makowski JR, Ava McQuade JR, Jamie Laskiewicz SR.
Preview – Having your top two runners from the previous season graduated leaves you questioning who will step into the #1 spot. Five runners are back from the Hersey team that finished ninth in the state meet. It also helps if you have a good freshman that can step into that top spot. Graceleen Mabry won the IESA Class 3A Championship running 11:25.9 on the 2-mile Maxwell Park layout. Mabry this past July ran 18:23 on soggy conditions at Detweiller Park. She finished even with Alexa Izenstark, who was the team’s third runner last year. Izenstark ran 17:59 in that state race.
What to watch is how this team forms especially in the top five. Only one senior, Elizabeth Waltz, is projected to be in their top seven. Sofia Donner and Alexandra Kopacz are expected to be in that top group. Zuzuanna Kruszewski, who was among the top seven most of last year will be a runner to also watch in that group. The Huskies should be a state team once again if they can have two runners near the top 25 and a top five spread between 45 to 50 seconds.
12 – Lake Zurich Coach – Jeremy Kaufmann 2024 Finish – 14th, 3A State North Suburban Conference
Runners – Avery Muhr JR, Celia Blaylock JR, Ruby Nissen SR, Trish Johnson SO, Polina Krupsky SR, Hannah Gillhaus SR, Chloe Wettstein FR, Abby Kocher FR, Riley Pitchford JR, Genevieve Sherman SO.
Preview – The Bears finished up their 2024 campaign finished 14 in the Class 3A State Meet. This fall looks promising with six runners back from that state team. The one thing to watch is if their pack moves up closer to the front in races. Avery Muhr and Celia Blaylock finished within two seconds of each other in the state race with Muhr finishing 63rd. Polina Krupsky had an outstanding track season first helping her team finish fifth in the 4x8 at state and then coming back to run 2:11.51 in the 800 Meter Run finals to finish third. We will see how that success translates to this fall.
Ruby Nissen and Trish Johnson had solid seasons last year and are good possibilities to be in the Bears’ top five. There are two freshmen to watch to see if they become a force in the top five. Chloe Wettstein finished second in the IESA 3A State Meet and could be a force to be reckoned with. Abi Kocher finished fourth behind Wettstein and might be a runner you could see in the top seven. Lake Zurich will need pack running to find success. Their spread on their top five at state was 39 seconds. The problem was that the pack started outside of the top 50. Lake Zurich will need a runner in the top 25 with two more runners in the top 50 at state to at least put them in contention to finish in the top 10 teams in November.
13 – Mt. Prospect-Prospect Coach – Peter Wintermute 2024 Finish – 4th, 3A State Mid Suburban League
Runners – Meg Peterson SR, Anna Zajac SR, Ella Benassi SR, Samantha Lobacz SO, Jocelyn Farina SR, Rachel Raub JR, Ella Cook SR, Allison Kalkwarf SO, Maddie Long SO (transfer from St. Viator), Adelaide Galla FR, McKenzie Carroll FR, Audrey Childs FR, Juliana Mihalopoulos FR, Caitlin Resac FR, Ashley Skelton FR, Brooklyn Stocking FR.
Preview – You could call it the end or an era with four of their top five core all graduating. At the same time, you could call it the beginning of something new. Three runners are back from last year’s fourth place state team that missed a trophy by 10 points. “We’re a growing program, with the next generation of Prospect stars ready to shine,” said their coach, Pete Wintermute. “Our veterans bring valuable state-level experience, while our younger athletes are eager to make their mark.”
Meg Peterson was in the shoes of some of these runners in 2022 when she was a freshman learning the ropes on how to be a “Knight runner”. Now look where this senior is now. “Meg has risen to the level of a top state athlete, learning to push herself harder with each challenge,” said Wintermute. “Her growing confidence has fueled her drive, allowing her to continually expand her limits.” Anna Zajac and Ella Benassi got state meet experience last fall and are ready to move into the top five. Samantha Lobacz emerged last year as a freshman running 11:12 on the track just missing the state meet. That could push her to bigger things this fall. Jocelyn Farina had a great summer of training and will also be ready to hop into the top seven.
What should be watched in the strong group of freshmen that enter this Prospect program. The Knights have seven new runners that were all-state last year in the IESA State Meet. One runner to watch is Adelaide Galla who was the Class 4A State Champion. Galla was all-state in the spring running 5:17.41 in the 1600 Meter Run. It is a team we will see early this season that will move in the top 10 depending on how these freshmen adapt to three-mile racing.
14 – New Lenox Lincoln-Way Central Coach – Ryan Stapinski 2024 Finish – 28th, 3A State Southwestern Suburban Conference
Runners – Keira Faxel SO, Mia Forystek JR, Brea Counihan JR, Jillian Davies JR, Ava Dughetti SR, Aubrey Shipman SR, Macy Gallagher SR, Grace Mathis SO, Ana Dal Porte SO, Paige Keating SO, Ania Topor SO.
Preview – Don’t let the finish that Lincoln-Way Central last year fool you, The team is healthy with last year’s top six runners back. The momentum that they got from their all-state performance in the 4x8 last May when they finished third.
The Knights were on the verge of becoming a top 10 team at the end of September when their top runner Brea Counihan suffered an injury right after the Naperville Invitational. They did not race the last of last year nor all of track season. Once she is 100% healthy, Counihan will be among the team’s top runner along with last year’s #1 runner at state Keira Faxel. The rest of their top five is talented including Mia Forystek, Jillian Davies, and Ava Dughetti. Ana Del Porte played a part in the success of the team’s 4x8 last spring and could contribute this fall. The pack should move up this season. Counihan was all-state as a freshman placing 18th. Their spread last year at state was 67 seconds. The addition of Counihan back could drop it lower. “The girls have made it a goal to be a top 10 team in the state and that is definitely a realistic goal we’re working to achieve,” said their coach Ryan Stapinski.
15 – Glen Ellyn Glenbard West Coach – Paul Hass 2024 Finish – 23rd, 3A State West Suburban Silver Conference
Runners – Alexa Novak SR, Lauren Bennett JR, Shayne Dietzen SO, Addie Nordman JR, Ella Demchinski SR, Mackenzie Gilbert SR, Ava Chase JR, Alyssa Novak SO, Molly Legel SO., Katie King SO (ran in middle school), Nora Janninck JR (400 from track).
Preview – Things are looking good for the Hilltoppers as they head into fall returning all seven runners from the team that finished a disappointing 23rd place. The possibility of a top ten finish for this group is within their reaches. “The thing that stuck out the most this summer about our team was the consistency with which the girls attended camp and put in the work,” said their coach, Paul Hass. “So often vacations interrupt summer training, but most if not all our potential top 7 or 10 ran together most days of our 6-week camp and continued to run together in the two weeks after camp concluded prior to the season. I cannot recall a summer where we had not only such great attendance, but also the number of miles the girls were able to run collectively as a group was remarkable (e.g., after not running with the team at all last summer, sophomore Shayne Dietzen became the first runner in program history to log perfect attendance throughout our 6-week camp).
Alexa Novak was all-state last year finishing 23rd. After a great track season, her success could bring bigger things this fall. “Due to non-running related medical procedures last summer and winter that interrupted her conditioning, Alexa followed her exceptional track season (leadoff on the all-state 4x8 and 10th in the 1600, as well as a solid performance at the Magis Mile) with a tremendous amount of quality and consistent conditioning,” said Hass. “No one on the team can keep up with her on long runs and she is very motivated to improve upon her all-state place.”
The team has a 35 second spread on their second through fifth runners last November. The gap though on Novak to the pack was 73 seconds. That should narrow down with Shayne Dietzen, Lauren Bennett, Ella Demchinski, and Addie Nordman ready to step back into the top five. Mackenzie Gilbert and Alyssa Novak will also contribute in this top five. “
16 – Huntley Coach – Matt Kaplan 2024 Finish – 10th, 3A State Fox Valley Conference
Runners – Isabella Ciesla SR, Cori Kilvinger SR, Hayley Rahman JR, Aspen Maldonado SR, Morgan Sauber JR, Ella Farquhar SO, Layne Schumacher SO
Preview – The Red Raiders will look to improve on last year’s 11th place state finish especially with their top five runners all back. “Our girls team goal is to be together as much as possible in the summer weeks,” said their coach, Matt Kaplan. “Our top 5 returners had a good mix of weeks spent together and weeks separated due to vacations and other camps. But when together. I was pleased with their daily commitment to each other and the work being done.”
The nucleus of this top five is strong with top five spread at state last year was only 45 seconds. Isabella Ciesla and Hayley Rahman lead the pack. “Izzy had a great junior season and this past spring track season she continued to push herself to new personal bests. Izzy will be a key component of our team success this fall, and it'll be fun to watch her look to build on last season's success,” said Kaplan. “Haley ran new bests this past track season and gained another season of great experience competing against the area's top runners. Haley's range of 800 to 3200 has been fun to watch and this fall the improved 3200 efforts will help her during the fall season.”
Cori Kilvinger showed last fall the desire she had running 18:00 at state. “Cori throughout the summer was someone who stood out with her daily focus and drive to have quality mornings with her team,” added Kaplan. “Cori showed from day 1 in the summer that she knows what she wants and exciting each day to work towards them. I'm looking forward to seeing her run for what she wants in her final season with the team.” Aspen Maldonado and Morgan Sauber will again be key runners in their top five. It will be interesting to see the two runners that step into the final two positions. A 90 second spread is projected between five and six but there will be time to get runners in those positions. Staying healthy will be a key in September. “I look forward to watching how this group works together this fall as they push each other to go after the successful fall season,” said Kaplan. “This group has a goal of being one of the top teams in 3A come postseason.”
17 – O’Fallon Coach – Neil James 2024 Finish – 25th, 3A State Southwestern Conference
Runners – Ellie Bush SR, Mae Naveira JR, Kiah Mix JR, Hannah Lewis SR, Kayla Kalmer SR, Alexia Donohue SO, Gwen Wolf SO, Autumn Gavin SR, Lily McCollum FR, Gwyn Cintron FR, Gabi Wolf FR, Holly Kalmer FR, Campbell Plassman JR
Preview – O’Fallon will look to finish in the top 20 this fall after placing 25th in the 2024 state meet. The Panthers will have five runners back from that squad. Last year’s third runner Madelyn Lane will not be back as she moved out of state. “The thing that really stood out this summer, is the increase in numbers and the consistency from previous seasons,” said their coach, Neil James. “We had a great blend of upperclassmen and newcomers who put in the work this summer.”
Ellie Bush was all state last year finishing 16th and should be the top runner on this team. Mae Naveira should be the second runner leading the pack. She was 80 seconds behind Bush at state. “Our top two runners, Ellie and Mae have really pushed the team to a higher level in training,” said James. “They have set a great example for our other runners especially with how they prepare.”
Kiah Mix and Kayla Kalmer were part of the top five and again will contribute in the top seven. Gwen Wolf and Campbell Plassman are two of several runners that could contribute in the scoring. Their spread on their top five was over two minutes. The spread on their second through five pack was 58 seconds. Moving their pack closer to Bush will be something to watch this season. “I am excited for us to see what we can do this fall,” added James. “The team has really put in the work and has great blend of experience and newcomers. We look forward to improving on last season’s finish.”
18 – Downers Grove South Coach – Doug Plunkett 2024 Finish – 27th, 3A State West Suburban Gold Conference
Runners – Nia Ortega JR, Gianna Lamb JR, Rose Jones JR, Nora Maier SO, Claire Posmer SR, Emily Gantz SR, Jacie Selig SR, Cora Murphy SO, Jane Fallon JR, Gabija Dauderis SR, Ashlin Burke FR, Hailey Kelliher FR, Hannah Larkin FR.
Preview – Downers Grove South surprised some last fall qualifying for state out of the Hinsdale Central Sectional. The Mustangs followed that up by finishing 27th at the state meet. Expectations will be high for this squad as they return six runners from their top seven. “Our overall numbers are much smaller this year (about 40 girls), but the girls that showed up have been very dedicated,” said their veteran coach, Doug Plunkett. “We may suffer from a lack of depth and struggle in August & September until we have time for some of our younger athletes to get more experience.”
The standout runner on this team is Nia Ortega who finished 75th in last year’s state meet. She had a breakout track season when she ran 10:41,99 to finish an all-state sixth in the 3200 Meter Run last May. She dropped her best down from 5:37 to 5:07 last spring. She could be among the top 20 this fall. “Nia has become much more confident, and it shows in her workouts (and track races),” said Plunkett. “We expect her to compete for an all-state finish this fall.”
The gap between Ortega and the rest of the top five was 28 seconds at state. That gap should grow considering Ortega’s improvement. Gianna Lamb and Rose Jones had good summers of training and will guide the pack. Claire Posmer, Emily Gantz, and Cora Murphy are some of the runners you will see challenge for top five spots. Coach Plunkett will retire at the end of this school year after coaching the Mustangs for the past 25 years. “After struggling quite, a bit early on last season, we had a great finishing month that ended with a berth at the 2024 State meet,” concluded Plunkett. “We are returning 6 of our top 7 (losing #4 Holly Johnson) and really want to build on the momentum of last year and reestablish DGS as a perennial state qualifier.”
19 – Hinsdale Central Coach – Mark McCabe 2024 Finish – 19th, 3A State West Suburban Silver Conference
Runners – Lily Hodneland SR. Ella Satre JR, Morgan Kohn JR, Evelyn Skay JR, Addie Krogstie SR, Marin Backus SO, Lucy McCormick JR, Grace Gruber SR, Sophia Molfese SR, Natalie Sullivan SO, Maya Gonzalez SO, Laura Deppe JR
Preview – It is typical that Hinsdale Central loses some of their top runners to graduation and finds the team rebuilding. The Red Devilettes are not rebuilding in 2025. They do return their top 13 runners after finishing 19th in last year’s state meet. “I’m hoping to have more depth this fall. It is something that we have lacked the past two years,” said veteran coach, Mark McCabe. “I think we will be much more improved and the potential to be a very competitive team. We had a good summer of training better than usual.”
Lily Hodneland and Ella Satre a strong 1-2 punch for this team. The two runners were within a second of each other at state with Hodneland finishing 57th. The senior had a good track season running under 2:16 six times in the 800 during the outdoor season. She finished tenth in the 800 at state. Satre dropped her 3200 time from 11:36 in 2024 to 10:57 this spring. The junior did qualify for state in that event. Morgan Kohn and Evelyn Shay were within 12 seconds of each other at state. Addison Krogstie will be one of the other runners that will challenge for a spot in the top five. Their state spread last year was 88 seconds. Their spread from their third runner to their fifth runner was 50 seconds.
20 – Naperville Central Coach – Matt Blondell 2024 Finish – 17th, 3A State DuPage Valley Conference
Runners – Eloise Graft SR, Kavea Senthilanand SO, Macy Bjork SR, Katelyn Burke JR, Emma Breese SR, Hannah Zei SO, Lauren Quigg JR, Carly Ernst SO (swimming, track), Maddie Calvey FR, Claire Lin FR.
Preview – The Redhawks lost their top two runners to graduation but still return four runners from last year’s 17th place state team. “The group’s dedication to training — both in organized sessions and on their own — has been excellent,” said Coach Matt Blondell. “Across all grades, the girls have committed to steady mileage, quality workouts, and recovery habits, creating a strong foundation heading into the season.”
What is convincing of the four runners coming back is that there was 16 separating the four runners. Kavea Senthilanand, Macy Bjork, Eloise Graft, and Katelyn Burke will need to keep the four close together and especially there is no real front runner on this team. Maddie Calvey is a freshman who had a good summer of training and could contribute immediately.
21 – Northbrook Glenbrook North Coach – Robert Leblanc 2024 Finish – 15th, 3A State Central Suburban League
Runners – Nicole Golebiowski SR, Veronica Eichmiller JR, MJ Seay JR, Gabriela Tamamidis SR, Payton Walker JR, Janessa Wu SO, Hannah Kinzer SO, Eva Margulis SO, Maribelle Lee SR, Millia Komsky SR
Preview – The Spartans came on strong last fall qualifying for the state meet for the first time since 2010 when they finished seventh. Glenbrook North finished 15th with four runners coming back ready to make a Detweiller Park appearance in November. “We had a great turnout at summer running this year. After last season's success, it was great to see the excitement to continue the hard work and training,” said Coach Robert Leblanc. “The girls are running well together and excited to get the season started. We were lucky that the younger runners also saw an increase in attendance, so we hope they will continue to grow as runners and follow in the footsteps of our varsity team.”
Nicole Golebiowski returns as the team’s #1 runner after a breakout junior year where she finished 47th at state. A top 25 finish is possible. Veronica Eichmiller and MJ Seay were 37 to 40 seconds behind Golebiowski and should close that gap. Gabriella Tamamidis was the team’s fourth runner back and sixth in their state race. Finding a fifth runner will be something to watch for. Payton Walker and Janessa Wu look to be the runners to watch in those positions. The two runners are projected to be 45-50 seconds from their projected top four.
22 – St. Charles North Coach – Shari Hayes 2024 Finish – 10th, 3A Lake Park Sec DuKane Conference
Runners – Julia Rodney JR, Gwen Hobson JR, Kara Glenn SO, Alyssa Oblak JR, Juliana Gonzalez JR, Elise Pimsner SR. Sidney Lainio SR, Kiley Doran JR, Meshva Patel SR
Preview – One of the mystery teams in this top 30 especially since we did not get any feedback from the team. The North Stars finished tenth last fall at the Lake Park Sectional and return five runners from that team. Their success last spring in track when they earned all-state honors finishing seventh in the 4x8. Julia Rodney was a key member of that quartet last year also made state finishing 33rd. Gwen Hobson was 33 seconds behind Rodney last November placing 90th.
The key runner for this team could be Kara Glenn who missed all last fall due to an injury. Glenn had a great freshman track season. Glenn just missed all-state but ran 10:51.07 in Charleston placing tenth. The sophomore also ran 5:07.19 in the mile at the New Balance Nationals Outdoors. She indicated that she would run in the fall after state track. Glenn is on the St. Charles North roster. The addition of this talented runner could make St. Charles North a top 15 team when they get to the state series. Brooklyn Thompson and Alyssa Oblak are returning runners that should fit into the team’s top five. The spread between their pack and Thompson is projected to be 80 seconds.
23 – Chicago DePaul College Prep Coach – Stephanie Stecz 2024 Finish – 2nd, 2A State Girls Catholic Athletic Conference
Runners – Emily Stecky JR, Abigail Radich SO, Claire Duman SR, Kate Lawrence SO, Emily Stoessel SR, Simrin Anderson SR, Ava Giordano SR, Lilyana Mugnaini JR, Ryan Greeby, Ella Buciak JR
Preview – DePaul College Prep makes the transition for Class 2A to Class 3A for at least the 2025 season after bringing back a trophy form Peoria in finishing second. The Rams will miss their second and third runners due to graduation. They do have five runners back led by Emily Stecky who had an outstanding sophomore year.
Stecky ended last fall all-state finishing the 2A race in tenth place. Stecky’s accomplishments were also stunning. She ran 2:09.31 to win the 2A 800 Meter Run title. Stecky should be among the top 10 finishers in the higher class this fall. Abigail Radich was the team’s fourth runner last fall finishing 58th. Radich was part of their 4x8 team that finished fifth in the Class 2A 4x8. She also made the finals as a freshman in the 1600 Meter Run. Claire Duman, Kate Larence, and Emily Stoessel all have state experience and should be among the top five. Stecky and Radich were separated by 72 seconds at state. The spread from Radich to Lawrence at state was 33 seconds. Their top five spread to start the season close to two minutes on Stecky.
24 – Hampshire Coach – Ryan Hollister 2024 Finish – 12th, 3A Lake Park Sectional Fox Valley Conference
Runners – Reese Long SO, Miya Moraga SO, Annabelle Haskins SR, Cassie Gatza SO, Natassa Papadakis SR, Kaley Byhre SR, Brianna Pasillas SO, Emily Kazberuk FR, Ellowyn Minot FR, Koraline Marincic FR.
Preview – Hampshire has never made it to the state meet as a team. This could be the year for the Whips to take that next step forward. Hampshire finished 12th last year at the Lake Park Sectional returning their top six runners. Reese Long did make it last year to the state meet finishing 72nd. She again will be the top runner for the team and will look to finish in the top 50 hopefully with her teammates with her on the starting line. What is promising is that the pack behind Long was within 40 seconds of each other and within 50 seconds of Long. Miya Moraga, Annabelle Haskins, Cassie Gatza, and Natassia Papadakis should again be the top five looking to close the spread on Long.
“We have five of our top seven from last year returning, so I'm excited to see how much we can improve,” said Coach Ryan Hollister. “I was extremely proud of how well our girls competed last year and we have plenty of depth so I wouldn't be surprised to see one of our other girls compete for a varsity spot. I think we're capable of finishing towards the top of our conference and regional meets. Reese Long qualified for state last season as an individual, but we'll need our pack to close the gap on Reese to qualify as a team.”
25 – Oak Park Fenwick Coach – Latoya Hill 2024 Finish – 17th, 2A State Girls Catholic Athletic Conference
Runners – Juliana Gamboa JR, Bridget Brunick SO, Lily Kotynek JR, Allison Austin JR, Victoria Alegre SO, Romy Bergetz SR, Isabelle Lefko JR, Teresa Urso JR, Eden Gerbbrecht SO.
Preview – It will be an interesting year for the Friars especially after moving from Class 2A where they finished 17th at the 2A State Meet to running this fall in Class 3A. Their top nine runners from last year are all back. Juliana Gamboa has been all-state in her first two years of high school cross-country finishing 21st in last year’s race. Bridget Brunick could be on the verge of some great things entering her sophomore season. Brunick ran 18:03 to finish 30th and 22 seconds behind her teammate. They should have a good top two adapting to Class 3A racing at state series time. Lily Kotynek, Allison Austin, and Victoria Alegre all have state meet experience and will contribute in their top five. The team’s top five spread is projected to be close to two minutes. Their third to five runner spread could be under 20 seconds.
26 – Wheaton North Coach – Peter Anderson 2024 Finish – 13th, 3A State DuKane Conference
Runners – Emily Offutt JR, June Rectenwald JR, Ema Eissler SR, Annika Carlson JR, Felicity Haworth SO, Sienna Keith SR, Addison Bailey SO, Sarah Farrell SO, Laura Roe SO, Katherine Peeler SR.
Preview – The bad news is that Wheaton North only has three runners back from their team that finished 13th in the 3A State Meet, The good news is all three runners were in the top five. The Falcons have a good core to work from one that could find their way back to the state meet. Emily Offutt and Ema Eissler were separated by 11 seconds and will lead the way. June Rectenwald was another two seconds behind Eissler and gives the team a tight pack. “Annika Carlson is the pleasant surprise,” said Coach Peter Anderson. “I knew she would fill in for the four graduating seniors from last year's state top 7. However, she is training at the highest level of her career with us.” Felicia Haworth and Sienna Keith are two of some runners that we will see in the top five. Six of the top seven runners back are underclassmen.

Preview – Joseph Pontrelli steps in as the new coach replacing Eric Sumon who retired. The Lions finished tenth in last fall’s Hinsdale Central Sectional. “The best thing about the summer was the participation of the senior class,” said Pontrelli. “They showed the coaching staff that they were invested in the program. They organized several team activities to bring the team together and consistently attended summer running.”
Mya Coglianese qualified for state running 18:14 in that race. She will be the top runner again for this team. “Mya, Jenna Lally, Grace Rhoten, and Addie Powers all had great summers,: Pontrelli explained. “I am excited to see how fast they can run during the season.” The team will start the season with an 81 second spread. That should narrow done as the season progresses. “I am looking forward to building a positive culture for our team which I feel is the building block to achieving results,” Pontrelli added. “We have great senior leadership skills this year, which I hope will prepare us in the case of injury or illness. The team is talented and, if we can stay healthy, I believe we can qualify for the State Meet.”

It is projected that their top five runners will all be underclassmen. Abby Seurynck, Isla Craig-Naples, Sophia Iniguez, and Sarah Mendoza were within 60 seconds of each other at the end of last season. Bradley could be among the top five runners when we get to state. A key to watch is the pack staying within 25 to 30 seconds of Bradley. “We always want to see how we can compete in our CSL Conference. We finished behind Glenbrook North and New Trier at the end, and the finish was the same at the State Meet as all 3 qualified,” added Downing. “As well, we will always have the goal of making it back to the State meet and seeing if we can compete to get to the top 10.”

They are a very welcoming and kind group of girls.”
Sofia Borther did make it to state last fall finishing 51st. That was her best finish in the three years that she has qualified for state individually. “Sofia is coming into the season strong and fit,” Morrison explained. “She has always been hard working, and this past track season and summer were no different. She has been a strong leader for us, too, leading the team in training during off weeks throughout the summer.” Taylor Peahl will lead the pack behind Borter with Alexis Guess, Mira Meyers, and Lucina Lechtenberg following. Their two to five spread at the end of last year was 55 seconds with the spread between Borther and Peahl at 62 seconds. “This group of girls is very coachable,” added Morrison. “They will do whatever I ask of them, and it has been a pleasure watching them progress and grow over the summer. Four runners are back from that team. Kayla Ritchie steps up as the top runner for the Trevians finishing 66th. Their top five spread at the end of last season was 2:09. Margaret Canmann, Sawyer Vyas, and Lily Rickard-Bugel also return with hopes of being back in the top five. There could be close to a 60 second gap between the now sophomore and Kate Roberts who was the team’s fourth runner last year. Olivia Mancini, Nora DeFrank, and Emily Flores all have state experience and will challenge for top five spots. The pack will need to stay tight this fall and close the gap to 40 seconds from Kaitei for East to make it back to state.

Freshmen Sydney Wilson along with O’Neill are possibles in the top five. “This summer we had about 25 girls consistently coming to our summer training camp,” said coach Louie Klein. “We focused on consistency of training and team building exercises and had one of the best and most fun summers of training in recent memory. The emergence of Erin Santerelli in her freshman season was impressive. Santerelli finished 53rd at state last year and could be among the top 25 this fall. Injuries slowed her down last May, but she appears ready to go this fall. There will be close to a two-minute gap between Santerelli and the rest of the pack. Kendall Santerelli will lead a pack that should be near 30 seconds between their second through fifth runners. Their growth last year could get them to sectionals this fall.

The Ironmen are a team that could finish among the top 10 by maybe punching their ticket to Peoria. Austin Peters takes over as coach as long-time leader Tom Patten retired. Lily Cavanaugh and Emma Pollitt traded off the top spot at the end of the year. It will be good for Peters to have two strong runners leading them. The team had a 107 second spread on their top five. Lyla Schanz, Emily Sayger, and Emma Kanagy will give Sandburg a strong top five. “The mindset and expectations changed for our group this summer as compared to where they were at last year,” said their coach, Tony Pena. “Last summer we knew our group was young, as well as inexperienced at the Varsity level. We entered last fall very 'green'. We also knew that we had some raw talent that probably needed a year of aerobic development. This group improved a ton last fall and were on the brink of qualifying for the State meet. They continued to improve through the winter and spring, culminating with a 19th place finish for our 4x8 relay. We also finished with 9 returning ladies under 6:00 in the 1600m run. They are a highly motivated and a hard-working group of young ladies and they have approached this summer with a completely difference mindset. This group believes they can compete with the better teams in the state.”

Runners - Morgan Bradley JR, Alivia Kath SO, Lexi Richter JR, Sophia Padilla SO, Araceli Desimonti SO, Leona Bateman JR, Lindsey Sturm FR, Josie Beiler FR.

Their top runner from last year state qualifier Kristin Soderlind chose not to run this fall. Second runner Morgan Bradley was projected to step up as the lead runner. Bradley suffered an injury that might keep her out until November according to Coach Alicia Rafferty. “I have a very small team this year,” added Rafferty. “Hopefully a culture building year which will eventually help us grow numbers.” We will have a good idea on how this shapes up in the first month of meets.

Six runners are back with the potential to take the next step up. Elizabeth Garrett made it to Peoria individually running 18:23 at Detweiller Park. Greta Kerr was 60 seconds behind Garrett and will need to get closer to her teammate in races. 11 of their top 12 runners from last year are back. The team spread last year ended at 105 seconds. Their spread will start the season at 85 to 90 seconds.

Isa Hasty was the team’s top runner most of last year. She individually qualified for state finishing 92nd. The team had a 93 second spread to end the season with Adeline Dietrich, Helen Hermann, Linaya Donnelly, and Riley Gaan trailing. The spread could fall to between 75 to 80 seconds to get the Vikings to the state meet.
Quincy Coach – Laura McClelland 2024 Finish – 10th, Norm Sec Western Big Six Conference
Runners – Peyton Kuhl SO, Abigail MacDonough SO, Amelia Knapp JR, Addison Baker SO, Elise Bradfield SO, Avya Chandler SR, Elianna Pitcher SR.
Preview – Is it the Quincy Girls team to make the trip to Detweiller Park like the school’s Boys team do a year ago? It might be a stretch after finishing tenth at the Normal Sectional. Four runners are back from that team. Peyton Kuhl did make it to state last year as a freshman placing 26th. A top 25 finish will be within her reach. Abigail MacDonough will lead the pack that could be over two minutes back of Kuhl. Lowering their top five spread under three minutes gets this team closer to a top seven sectional finish.
Roselle Lake Park Coach – Jay Ivory 2024 Finish – 13th, 3A Lake Park Sec DuKane Conference
Runners – Ruth Dellaria JR, Lily Potts JR, Julianne Solano SO, Yana Zraychyk SR, Vivienne Stojanovic SO, Juliana Selvaggio SR, Dominika Potok SO, Aubrey Haugh JR (from tennis), Monica Chukurov FR, Penelope Panagiotopoulos FR, Emilia Panek FR, Lillian Opozda FR
Preview – A team to keep an eye on this fall. The Lancers finished 13th in their own sectional last year returning six runners back from that team. “I think what stood out this summer was our commitment as a team,” said Jay Ivory. “We had the best turnout and attendance that we have had in a long time.” Ruth Dellaria was the top runner last year as a sophomore making it to state where she finished 77th. The team had close to a two-minute spread on their top five to end the season. That will need to be lower for this team to get closer to qualifying. Lilly Potts and Julianne Solano look to be the runners that will lead their scoring pack. “We are just really looking forward to this season,” added Ivory. “This could be the best team we have had in several years.” The last time that the team qualified for the state meet is when they finished second in 2012.
Schaumburg Coach – Caitlin Roberts 2024 Finish – 22nd, 3A State Mid Suburban League
Runners – Emma Walz JR, Claire Swiderski JR, Dilana Kowaczek JR, Chloe Pisto JR, Iya Repple JR, Megan Lewandowski SO, Cecilia Puchalski SR.
Preview – It might be tough for Schaumburg to make it to the state meet after finishing 22nd last year. Three of their top four runners have graduated. Emma Walz was the team’s third runner at state running 18:32. Walz and Claudia Swiderski give the Saxons a solid 1-2 in the front. A lot of building within the top seven will need to be done, especially in September. Their top five spread to start the year is projected to be close to 2:30.
St. Charles East Coach – Bradley Kaplan 2024 Finish – 7th, Glenbard West Reg DuKane Conference
Runners – Adley Wilson SO, Leah Sutherland SO, Amalia Im SR, Nicole Mayer JR, Lilliana Margewich JR, Ruby Garcia JR, Claudia Theis SR, Laineu Poole SR.
Preview – The Saints ended last season on a heart-breaking note as they missed qualifying for sectionals by one point placing seventh at Glenbard West. At least they did have Adley Wilson and Leah Sutherland making it to Lake Park individually. Wilson made her way to state where she finished 54th. She could be within reach to grab an all-state spot this fall. Two more runners, both in the top five from regionals also return. Liliana Margewich and Amalia Li are runners we should see in the top five. Ruby Garcia is a runner we also might see in the top five. This team remembers what happened last fall which could drive East to big things in October and November.
Wheaton-Warrenville South Coach – Robert Harvey 2024 Finish – 12th, 3A State DuKane Conference
Runners – Addy Lindsey SO, Clara Franken SO, Arielle Friebel JR, Abby Barrett SR, Olivia Martinez SR, Natalie Houcek FR, Kate Rodakowski JR, Shyla Paramsothy SO
Preview – This will be a young but talented team this fall. The Tigers just missed the top 30 area but a place we should see them in soon. There will be some rebuilding especially losing three runners to graduation led by Nicole Poglitsch. “With the graduation of a very influential and positive senior class, I was a little worried about how our leadership would develop,” said Coach Rob Harvey. “My worry was very misplaced. We are in great hands with our leadership. We have four captains: Abby Barrett, Emily Fahrman, Ellie Flores, and Olivia Martinez.” It could be Addy Lindsey that becomes their #1 runner after being the team’s second runner at state. Clara Franken was 19 seconds behind Lindsey at state; that could close as the season progresses. Abby Barrett and Olivia Martinez that are strong seniors and could push for top spots, Arielle Friebel also has state experience that will help this season. Natalie Houcek leads a group of talented freshmen. Houcek did not lose a race at Hubble Middle School last fall. The freshman could contribute this year; We will have a better idea when October meets start. “As with every season, we will have a long-term approach using every workout and race to build momentum.” added Harvey. “Our season schedule has been modified adding a few more chances to race. We will need every competitive opportunity and workout to reach our full potential. We have a great senior class...positive leadership should not be an issue for us. They have all stepped up to welcome our underclass athletes into the program.”
