What's Going On Across the Country

Alaska

Two weeks post-state meet, some of the top teams from Alaska went down to Oregon for the George Fox Cross Country Classic to test themselves against out-of-state competition. The Class 4A boys champion, West Anchorage, finished second to Summit OR. Finn Walker of West Anchorage was ninth in the boys gold race. West Valley (Fairbanks), the Alaskan champion, placed sixth in the girls race. Freshman Kendall Kramer was 10th.

 

Arizona

The Xavier College Prep girls scored 18 points and put four girls in the top five at the Titan Invitational in Gilbert. Anthony Haren of Perry edged Caden Hercules of Desert Mountain, 15:52 to 15:53.

The US#3 Desert Vista girls traveled to Oregon and won the George Fox XC Classic on a blustery weather day at Willamette Mission State Park. INTERVIEW

Allie Schadler ran 19:16.8 at the Rio Rico Rattler in the gold division race and her sister Samanatha ran 20:29.4 for second. Third place was 80 seconds further back on a tough course.

 

California

In Irvine, at the Orange County Championships, Jack Landgraf of Dana Hills was the standout performer with a 14:53.3 (3 miles) clocking in the boys sweepstakes race. Dana Hills won the team title with 52 points, while Trabuco Hills (114), El Toro (120), Brea Olinda (124) and Valencia (136) battled for second. Dana Hills also won the girls championship with 91 points. Haley Herberg of Capistrano Valley was the individual winner in 17:01.6.

Esperanza’s boys edged Servite on a sixth-man tiebreaker for the small school title and Laguna Hills won the small school girls title.

Erik Gonzalez of Rubidoux won the boys sweepstakes race at the Inland Empire Cross Country Challenge, covering three miles in 14:35.8. Steven Khan of Ayala was second, just one second back. Jacquelyn Hill of Etiwanda won the girls sweepstakes race in 17:39.7.

 

Colorado

Lauren Gregory of Fort Collins ran 17:16 for 5,000 meters to win her fourth Front Range League title and she was 92 seconds up on the next finisher. Broomfield scored 62 points for the girls team win and Boulder was second with 99. Dylan Ko of Fossil Ridge ran 15:55 to win the boys race and Boulder edged Fort Collins 47 to 58.

Kayla Young of Denver North ran 18:00 for 5K at the Wiggins Invitational and had an 85-second advantage over the field. She led her team to the victory as well, 40-48 over Palmer Ridge. Kenny Lang of Niwot ran 16:21 to win the boys race.

Brie Oakley of Grandview won the Centennial League title with a 17:28 performance at Littleton. She won by 69 seconds. Cherry Creek won a tight team battle with 49 points to Grandview’s 51, Arapahoe’s 53 and Cherokee Trail’s 62. James Logan of Arapahoe won the boys race in 15:52 and Cherokee Trail took the boys league title with 49 points.

Georgia

Jacob McLeod of Trinity Christian ran the fastest time at the Nike/Fleet Feet Coach Wood Invitational in 10 years when he clocked 15:30.3 for 5,000 meters at Gainesville State College. McLeod won by 28 seconds. Brookwood took the team title with 110 points as the top eight teams all scored less than 200. Serena Tripodi of The Lovett School won the girls in 18:11.4 and had a 21-second margin. Milton edged South Forsyth for the title, 70-72.

 

Idaho

Eve Jensen of Boise ran 17:34.9 to win the Boise City Meet and lead her team to the title. Borah put four in the top five to run away with the boys crown.

Maryland

 

Kate Murphy and Lake Braddock traveled north from Virginia and put on a show at the Frank Keyser Invitational in Boonsboro. Murphy ran 16:56.9 for 3 miles and beat Annapolis standout Maria Coffin (17:10.2). Murphy led her team to a 1-4-5-7-10 finish and 24 points. Lake Braddock also won the boys title with 47 points and River Hill was second with 81. Will Merritt of Smithburg won the top boys race in 15:06.3 for a big PR.

 

Massachusetts

The Wellesley boys packed five scorers within 20 seconds and scored 43 points to win the MSTCA Twilight Invitational in Falmouth. Ben Kovacs from Saint John’s (Shrewsbury) won the Varsity Division 1 race in 15:20.1. Clare Martin of Newton South won the girls race in 17:45.5 and had a 35-second margin. Hopkinton won a close team battle with 123 points.

 

Michigan

The Michigan state championships are Saturday at Michigan Speedway.

 

Minnesota

Seth Eliason of Hopkins won a photo finish over Patrick Roos of Edina at the Lake Conference Championships at Gale Woods Regional Park, 15:42.05 to 15:42.23. In one of the fiercest conference meets in the country, the Edina girls scored 24 points to beat Wayzata (68). Jaycie Thomsen of Wayzata got the individual win in 18:22.8. Wayzata's boys put five in the top nine to win the boys title with 33 points.

 

Montana

The Bozeman Hawks will try to extend their winning streaks at the Montana state championships on Saturday in Kalispell. That's also home turf for Annie Hill of Glacier, who will be one of the stars of the meet.

 

Nebraska

The Nebraska state meet is Friday in Kearney. Look for defending state champion Seth Hirsch of Millard West to go after the state meet record of 15:22.

 

Nevada

It was a busy week in Nevada. In the South, the action was dominated by the Bud O’Dea Classic (Frosh-Soph) and the Southern Division Championship. Centennial’s boys and Foothill’s girls won the ninth grade team titles. Palo Verdes’ boys and girls swept the 10th grade team titles.

At the Southern Division finals, Centennial’s Alexis Gourrier (19:22) and Arbor View’s Ian Jackson (16:46) ran the fastest times.

In the North, at the Elko Invitational, Spring Creek swept the boys and girls titles. Spring Creek’s William Falinni-Haas ( 16:44 5k) and Elko’s Kacie Bell (19:27 5k) were individual winners.

Some Northern schools travelled to Folsom, Calif. for the Hoka One One Bronco Invitational. Reed’s Anthony Ocegueda placed second in the Varsity Large School Division with a 15:45 5K. Reed’s Samantha King-Shaw placed 10th in the Varsity Large School Division with a 19:26 5k.

 

New Hampshire

Jacqueline Gaughan of Exeter ran a PR 17:12.6 for 5,000 meters at the Northeast XC Championships in Rhode Island. She finished second in the championship girls race.

 

New York

At the Northeast XC Championships in Rhode Island, Sachem North duo Christopher Tibbet (15:06.4) and John Lauer (15:10.5) went 1-2 in the championship race. Sachem North beat runner-up Manhasset 61-80. Katherine Lee of Shoreham-Wading River put down a time of 16:45.5 to win the championship girls race. She also led her team to the title with 48 points.

 

Oregon

Strong winds cut down on the usually fast times at the George Fox Cross Country Classic, as Yacine Guermali of Camas WA was the only boy to break 16 minutes (15:58). Summit OR won the boys gold division team title with 40 points while Alaska 4A champion West Anchorage was second with 87. Olivia Brooks made a strong return to the Summit girls lineup and won the top girls race in 18:08. The Storm placed second behind Desert Vista, 34 to 63. Camas WA was third and West Valley AK, the Alaksan 4A team champ, was sixth.

 

Utah

The Utah state meet is Wednesday at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City.

American Fork boys ready to roll

 

Virginia

The Blacksburg girls secured another big win, taking the Milestat Invitational in Mechanicsville with 64 points. Rachel Northcutt of Cosby ran 17:35 to win the Varsity A race.

Waleed Suliman of Douglas Freeman ran an impressive 14:49 to take the Varsity A boys win, putting 24 seconds on the field by the time he reached the finish tape. James Madison scored 177 points in a very tight team battle to secure first place.

 

Washington

Yacine Guermali of Camas won his second big invitational title in two weeks, taking the gold division boys race at the George Fox Cross Country Classic in 15:58. The Camas boys and girls were both third.

 

Wyoming

Anna Gibson led Jackson's girls to a 20-point domination of the 4A West Conference last Friday, clocking 18:24. Kelly Walsh won the boys meet. Laramie swept the team titles at the 4A East Conference.

The Wyoming state meet is Saturday.
