Top Performer:  Tamagno, Austin (2016) (Brea-Olinda, CA- PR:  4:09.43

Most would agree that Austin Tamagno is the top male freshman find of 2013 across all events.  Austin's 4:09.43 is a US Freshman record, and over 7 seconds faster than the next two freshman in the USA (Jake Ogden and Philip Rocha, also from CA - see below)[Note - Austin's US Record was short lived - Minnesota's Eli Krahn ran 4:09.38 only one week later]. Austin broke 4:20 at least 9 times this season, and finished second at Orange County Champs and CIF-SS D3 Final (Video).  His season culminated at the State Finals where he ran 4:09.43 for third place!  Not surprisingly, Austin is also a standout at 800 and 3200 meters. A note about methodology - Top performances were gathered from results submitted to the DyeStat's TFX Database.  The top performer plus the next four in the grade were provided.  In the case of ties, additional performers were shown.  Wind speeds weren't considered except in the case where a wind-aided time beats out a wind legal time (knocks it off the list) with only a marginally better mark.  In those cases I showed more than 5 total performances.  The rankings were done purely based on "best PR", and did not take in such factors as consistency, event diversity, or championship performances.  Though I made every effort to get all marks, I would not be surprised if someone was overlooked, particularly if that mark was achieved in a smaller meet.  For that I apologize in advance.

There are many many more great performances I wish I could have covered here, but I hope this does a good job of highlighting some of the top grade-level stars in our amazing state.  Enjoy!
