Tokyo awarded 2020 Olympics and Paralympics

September 7 - Tokyo were today awarded the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, beating Istanbul after Madrid were eliminated in the opening round.  

It will be the first occasion that the Games have been staged in the Japanese capital since 1964.

It was the culmination of a race in which right up to the announcement it was too close to call. 

But in the end, Tokyo polled 60 votes to Istanbul's 36, a comprehensive victory that seemed unlikely earlier in the week
