Arcadia Invitational Highlights
Saturday: * US#1 for Stamatia Scarvelis of Dos Pueblos CA with 172-7 in the discus. She also threw 52-1 to win the shot put and sweep both events against formidable Ashlie Blake NV. * US#1 for Vashti Cunningham of Bishop Gorman NV with her clearance of 6-2 in the high jump. She had a good attempt at 6-3, which would have been a sophomore class record. As it is, she is just a quarter inch behind Gabrielle Williams (a 2012 Olympic Trials competitor) on the all-time Nevada list. * US#1 for Paul Lucas of Arizona in the 200, where he ran 20.84 seconds. * In a much-anticipated girls 3200 there was a no-show (Sarah Baxter) and Alexa Efraimson's bid for a HSR fell apart on her fifth (76), sixth (79) and seventh (77) laps. Still, her 9:55.92 is No. 5 all-time. And Allie Ostrander stepped up big for second place and a new Alaska record with 10:03.66. Bethan Knights and Anna Maxwell both broke 10:05. * In the boys race, a record 19 boys slipped under nine minutes. And if you counted Estevan De La Rosa of Arcadia running 8:56 in the seeded race, the total was 20. As expected Blake Haney of Stockdale was the class of the field, tearing away late to win in 8:46.80. The surprise came from Andrew Rafla of Idaho, breaking his state record with 8:50.55 and getting second ahead of Cerake Geberkidane CO.
