Huge weekend offers lots to sort through

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Whew, Saturday was chocked full of big meets from one end of the country to the other and there is lots to break down. We're still gathering details and more photos to document what happened at places like Bowdoin Park and Genesee Valley Park in New York, Kenilworth Park in Washington D.C., Eagle Island Park outside Boise, Idaho, Portland Meadows in Oregon, and more.

Keep tabs on some of DyeStat's best photos by following @dyestat on Instagram.

But here's a brief synopsis to get it started.

At the Bowdoin Park Classic, there was an early season clash of the top two boys teams in the U.S. La Salle RI, No. 1 in the DyeStat rankings, went to the starting line without one of its top runners, Jack Salisbury, who stayed home sick. CBA, No. 2 in the rankings, won the meet with 41 points. La Salle was next with 54.

Plug Salisbury into the equation and it becomes very obvious that these two teams are VERY close.

- At Portland Meadows, Nike Pre-Nationals brought a lot of schools together from California, Oregon and Washington -- some of whom wanted to get a little extra time on the course where the NXN title has been decided the past nine years.

And Great Oak of Temecula, Calif. remained one of the hottest programs in the country by sweeping boys and girls titles at a major invitational for the second weekend in a row. Destiny Collins was also sensational yet again, winning the elite girls race in 17:09.9. This all came after Great Oak's "B" team won the Dana Hills Invitational earlier in the day in California.

- At the Roy Griak Invitational, unseasonably warm conditions in the 80s made Saugus (Calif.) feel right at home and the girls knocked off reigning NXN champ Wayzata. Samantha Ortega picked up a very nice win as well, running 18:13.8. The Saugus boys were third and Wisconsin's top guy, Olin Hacker, edged Iowan Thomas Pollard for the boys individual title in the gold race, 15:35.76 to 15:36.16.

Saugus coach Rene Paragus told DyeStatCAL's Erik Boal:

"The boys gave the girls a lot of feedback. Our boys said it was the hardest course they've ever run. You were either going up or down a hill the entire time. There were very few flat stretches out there.

"It was definitely a strength course and the boys went out too hard. We were leading after a mile and a quarter, but Wayzata made us pay for it in the last mile."

- At the Bob Firman Invitational, Makena Morley bounced back in a big way from a rare loss on Montana soil with a course record 17:24. She beat the defending champion, Lucy Biles of Herriman UT.

Meanwhile, Conner Mantz of Sky View UT got a four-second victory over Tannner Anderson of North Central WA and Elijah Armstrong of Pocatello ID was third.

"It was a satisfying race," Mantz said Sunday, while taking an official visit to BYU. "Elijah and Tanner and I were all working for it. It looked like I had the better day that day."

Mantz had intended to be a bit more conservative, but went to the lead between 1,000 and 1,200 meters in, and never gave it up.

Davis UT swept the teams titles. The girls, led by Aubrey Argyle's third-place finish, went faster than they did a year ago in breaking the combined team time record.

- At the McQuaid Invitational in Rochester, N.Y., Elmira's girls stunned US#1 Fayetteville-Manlius by four points, 67-71. And sophomore Jessica Lawson of Corning NY blazed a course record 16:43 for the 5K win.

I caught up with Abbey Wheeler from Elmira on Sunday and she said that everyone on the team had left the park already before they got word that they had won the team championship. Last night was Homecoming at the school and so everyone was eager to get home and get changed for the dance.

"I think a lot of the girls stepped up," said Wheeler, who qualified for NXN as an individual last year and took 17th. She was second behind Lawson, a Foot Locker finalist, on Saturday. "To see Jessica (Thatcher) beat some of F-M's top girls shows what kind of player she is going to be."

When the phones started ringing, the members of the team were scattered in different vehicles. But the voice was that of coach Ben Cardamone

"Coach was crying," Wheeler said. "All the coaches met us at the dance and gave us our plaque. It was a pretty eventful night."

Wheeler also had the best view of Lawson, who tore off and got the win.

"She ran a great race. Absolutely perfect," Wheeler said. "I remember that right after the mile she made a big move and surged away. I tried to get her back, but couldn't. Her race was fantastic." RESULTS

- At Stanford, John Dressel of Mt. Spokane WA made his recruiting visit memorable with a big victory. And Fiona O'Keeffe of Davis Sr. ran away in the girls race to win in 16:40. Ella Donaghu of Grant OR was second, more than 30 seconds back. RACE VIDEOS

- At the new DCXC meet in Washington, D.C., newcomer Weini Kelati of Heritage (Leesburg, Va.) won the junior class flighted race in 17:45. That was 13 seconds faster than Nora McUmber MD ran to win the senior race.

Kevin James of Cardinal O'Hara PA ran 15:11 to win the senior boys race, fastest of the day there.

- At the RimRock Invitational in Kansas, there was a high quality boys field and Zachary Alhamra of Pine Creek CO picked up a very nice win in 15:20.6. He beat the best guys from two different states -- Stephen Mugeche of Blue Springs MO (second in 15:27.3) and Stuart McNutt of Blue Valley West KS (third in 15:43.7). TFX Results

- In Illinois, Jesse Reiser of McHenry was victorious at the Palatine Invitational and ran 14:38.7 for three miles to edge out twins Jake (14:40.1) and Luke (14:43.4) Hoffert of Yorkville. St. Louis University's boys won the team title and so did the Palatine girls. Kelly O'Brien from Palatine led the way with 17:22.3, edging Mimi Smith of New Trier by a fraction of a second. DyeStatIL was on hand to capture the videos.
