Duplantis quickly rises to the top in Louisiana

 

State Meet Highlights

 

Gabrielle Jennings pushed her all-time number of Louisiana state championships (track and cross) to 37 with three individual victories plus the 4x400 for tiny Class C First Baptist. She's been winning them since the fifth grade. The meet also saw Mondo Duplantis of Lafayette win his first outdoor state title in the pole vault.

 

Top Performances:

 

- Mondo Duplantis, the freshman from Lafayette, jumped 16-9 to break the 5A meet record in the pole vault.

 

- Janie O'Connor of Zachary, a sophomore, won the 5A 100 meters in 11.52 (2.0) and was second to Hannah Jackson of Sulphur in an exciting 200 final, 23.73 to 23.78. Jackson's winning time was state meet record and O'Connor's time was under the record as well. Jackson was second in the 100 behind O'Connor in 11.76. O'Connor completed a triple with her victory in the 400 in 54.86 and helped her team win the championship.

 

- Peyton Montgomery of Barbe won the 5A javelin with 162-5.

 

- Keitavious Walter of Ruston won the 5A 100 meters with 10.36 (2.5w). 

 

- Corrieon Mosby of Natchitoches Central won the 5A 200 meters with 21.35, eding favored Kirk Merritt of Destrehan (21.53). Mosby also won the 400 with 48.01.

 

- Eric Coston of St. Paul's won the distance double at 5A with 4:15.33 and 9:19.99.

 

- Brandon Singleton of Hahnville won 5A titles in the 110 hurdles (13.81) and the 300 hurdles (37.53).

 

- New Iberia's boys ran 3:16.07 to win the 5A 4x400 title. That time held up for US#28.

 

- Jace Attuso of Catholic Baton Rouge, a junior, jumped 23-9.75 to win the 5A long jump. He was also second in the triple jump. Catholic BR dominated the team competition with 121 points.

 

- Donte' Jackson of Riverdale sped to 4A titles in the 100 (10.30w) and 200 (21.26). Jackson is a prized cornerback recruit for LSU.

 

- Christian Miller from Northside won the 4A triple jump with a big mark of 50-9 (2.5w).

 

- Tahrike Jones of Lutcher won the 4A 400 meters in 47.97.

 

- Chris Edwards from Washington-Marion won the 4A high jump with 7-0 and was second in the triple jump with 48-8.50.

 

- Christian Boyd of North Desoto doubled in the 4A hurdles with 14.16 and 37.54, which was a new meet record.

 

- The Morgan City boys ran 41.42 to win the 4A 4x100 relay.

 

- Freshman Aldrianna Dupree from Plaquemine was a double winner in the 4A 100-200 with 11.91 and 25.13.

 

- Alexis Rigmaiden of St. Louis threw 155-7 to win the 3A javelin title.

 

- Franklin's boys 4x200 ran 1:25.40 for a new Class 3A record and US#12.

 

- Bossier got a couple of big performances in the 3A boys meet. Kelvin Brooks ran 21.49 to win the 200 meters and Cartavia Cook jumped 23-3 to win the long jump.

 

- John Curtis HS of New Orleans swept the 3A team titles. The girls scored 63 points, the boys 82.

 

- Gabrielle Jennings of First Baptist has virtually no competition at this level. She won the the 3,200 meters by four minutes. She pushed herself to 5:00.60 in the 1,600 to break her state meet record and won that by a minute and 24 seconds over her sister, Madelyn. She won the 800 in 2:16.92 -- and won it by 26 seconds.

 

- Micah Dye of Ouachita Christian won the 1A shot put by more than 10 feet with 56-8.50 and he also won the discus with 166-2.

 

- New Iberia Catholic's Reagann Leleux vaulted 12-7 in Class 2A, good for No. 9 all-time freshman. Her big sister Morgann used to hold the national record. 

 

- Episcopal senior Kaitlyn Walker won the 2A high jump with 5-7.  

 

- Episcopal senior Rachel Misher ran to double gold in the 2A 100-200 with 11.74w/24.71.

 

- Westminster Christian sophomore Ivy Cains doubled in the 2A hurdles with 15.57 and 43.35.

 

 

Top Competition: In the 4A boys long jump, Damien Bernard of Cecilia jumped 24-1.75 (1.3) on his final attempt to win the long jump over Jerome Wynn of Fair Park, who went 24-0.25 (2.8). Bernard had only been long jumping for three weeks.
