D2 runners Schwartz, Hynes fastest at Thetford

In the Vermont Division 2 state race, U-32 sophomore Rena Schwartz captured the individual title and ran the fastest time of the day by any female, running 19 minutes, 23.8 seconds at Thetford Academy. Harwood Magill won the team championship with 31 points.
In the boys D2 race, Matt Hynes of Montpelier was the only boy to go under 17 minutes, finishing in 16:59.8. Montpelier finished with three runners in the top five and four in the top 10 to score 49 points and win the team championship. U-32 was a close second with 52 points.
In the Division 1 State Championship race, Sophia Gorman of Champlain Valley Union won the girls 5,000-meter race in 19 minutes, 30 seconds. Champlain Valley finished with three runners in the top 10.
In the boys D1 race, Champlain Valley dominated, as Tyler Marshall (17:04.2) led a strong pack to a team win. Four runners placed in the top five and five in the top seven.
In the Divisional 3 state race, Stowe senior William McGovern ran the fastest time of the day for the boys, finishing in 16 minutes, 47.3 seconds. McGovern won by nearly 15 seconds on the course that will also be the site of the New England Championships in two weeks.
Stowe also won the team title, with four runners in the top 10 and six in the top 20 to score 22 points.
In the girls race, Katie Brown of Bellows Free Academy-Fairfax was the top finisher, clocking 20:43.7 to win on the 5K course. Owbow easily won the team championship with 21 points. |
