Geist uncorks 74-3.50 to win state shot put title

 

State Meet Highlights

A star-studded junior class highlighted Pennsylvania's PIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. 

But amid multiple meet records and many national-caliber performances, it was a freshman -- Thelma Davies of Girard College that left the biggest impression on the two-day meet at Shippensburg University.

- Davies won the AA 100-meter crown in a state meet record time of 11.58 seconds. She later won the 200 meters in 23.85.  

- The AAA field events were dominated by Knoch junior Jordan Geist. Geist set a new personal and all-time junior class record on Friday when he unleashed a 74-3.50 throw. With the national-leading throw, Geist moved into some elite company. He is now one of just six high school athletes to surpass 74 feet in the shot in U.S. track and field history. On Saturday Geist won the discus, with a mark of 183 feet. 

- In the javelin, Connellsville junior Madison Wiltrout took another step in her road to recovery. She successfully defended her AAA title with a throw of 164-1. It was a season's best. 

- Also in AAA field action, Greg Lauray of Notre Dame GP cleared 6-10 in the high jump and edged out Williamsport's Terrance Massey-Porter (6-10) for the title. 

- Junior Khyasi Caldwell-adams of Pocono Mountain East picked up the AAA long jump crown soaring 19-5.50. 

- Valerie Przekop of Central Bucks South, a junior, cleared 5-9 -- a current top 10 jump -- to win the high jump AAA crown. 

- South Williamsport's Katie Jones went 13 feet for the AA pole vault crown.     

- Junior Evelyn Berecz of Downington East won the triple jump (39-5.50).

- In the pole vault, senior Griffin Thompson of State College recorded the highest mark, clearing 16-3.

- On the track, standout junior Chanel Brissett of Cheltenham was one of the top performers of the week as she won the AAA 100 hurdels in a US#3 time of 13.19. 

- In the 300 hurdles, Yasmin Brooks of Susquehanna Township claimed the AAA crown in 41.71, a top 10 time. 

- Junior Olivia Arizin of Cardinal O'Hara tuned in a US#4 time of 2:06.80 to win the AAA 800 title. Agnes Mansaray of Penn Wood was runner-up in 2:07.53, a US#9 time. 

- In the boys 800, Domenic Perretta of Beaver Falls ran the fastest time (1:50.10), US#9. Perretta also won the 1,600 (4:17.62).

- In AAA action, senior Joseph Espinal of Wilson won an impressive 800 race in 1:51.09. Three total all clocked under 1:52. Matt Wisner of Carlisle (1:51.49) and Jaxson Hoey (1:51.58). All three runners recorded top 15 times. 

 - Mady Clahane of Cumberlnd Valley ran a U.S. No. 12 time of 4:46.26 to win the AAA 1,600. 

- Aislinn Devlin of Downington West led 10 girls under the 11 minute barrier in the 3,200. The junior won in 10:28.38. 

- In the boys AAA 3,200 North Pocono's Matt Kravitz won in 9:09.34. He became just the second athlete in school history to win a boys' state title. 

- Alex Milligan of State College won the AAA 1,600 in 4:10.17.

- Junior Uche Nwogwugwu of North Penn won the girls 400 AAA title in 54.09. Senior Joshua McLemore of Downington West went under 47 seconds to win the AAA title in 46.82 seconds. McLemore also on the 200 title in 21.41, barely beating Terrance Laird of Coatesville. 

- In the 300 hurdles, sophomore Ayden Owens of North Allegheny clocked 37.48, a top 30 time to claim the AAA crown. 

- Junior Journey Brown of Meadville won the 100 dash AAA crown in 10.73.
