Rayvon Grey jumps past Bob Beamon at state

 

State Meet Highlights 

- After soaring 26 feet to win the long jump title at New Balance Nationals Indooor, Rayvon Grey's pursuit of Bob Beamon's 51-year-old New York state record outdoor was on. The Beacon senior got it done by jumping 25-4.50 to surpass the legendary world record holder by an inch. Beamon still has the all-condition mark with a wind-aided 25-6.75.

- Samantha Watson of Rush-Henrietta, one of the biggest stars in the entire country, pulled away from eighth grader Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland on the final lap to win the 1,500 meters in 4:22.09. Tuohy ran 4:24.36. Watson came back to complete her double by winning the 400 meters in 54.70 seconds.  She also 

- Ben Petrella of Liverpool broke a 29-year-old meet record by running 8:52.42 in the 3,200 meters for the win. Junior Noah Affolder of Carthage was second in 8:55.20 and Maine-Endwell's Dan Schaffer was third in 8:57.20.

- Jessica Lawson of Corning closed in 68 to pull away from the field in the girls 3,000 meters and ran a winning time of 9:24.36, which was good enough for US#2. Dianna Vizza of North Shore was second in 9:32.26 and Abbey Wheeler of Elmira was third in 9:33.49.

- Huntington's Infinite Tucker swept the 110 hurdles (14.06) and 400 hurdles (52.35) titles and ran on the winning 4x400 relay.

- Halle Hazzard of St. Anthony's and Lanae-Tava Thomas of Rush-Henrietta had a couple of great battles for state sprint supremacy. Hazzard won the 100 meters 11.76 to 11.84. In the 200, Thomas got the better of Hazzard, 23.73 to 23.92.

- Kelly Brown from Wilson Magnet was the top sprinter on the boys side, claiming the 100 meters in 10.75 seconds and the 200 meters in 21.45.

- The girls 800 meters championship was a five section final won by Sage Hurta of Hamilton in a time of 2:08.57. All eight runner in the fifth section ran faster than 2:13. Kaitlin Ryan of Bronxville ran 2:09.31 to win section 4 but did not get to race against Hurta.

- Eion Nohill of John Jay Cross River won the boys 800 meters in the third of four sections with 1:52.77. Nohilly, son of the great Tom Nohilly, also later won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:06.36, edging out Noah Affolder (9:06.52) and freshman Sam Affolder of Carthage (9:16.43).

-  Dan Schaffer from Maine-Endwell held off Fordham Prep's Conor Lundy over the final 400 meters to claim the 1,600 meters championship with 4:09.58.

- Megan Reilly from Warwick Valley won the 2,000-meter steeplechase with 6:45.34. 

- Alyssa Sandy of Paul Robeson, who broke the all-time New York record this spring, won the 100 hurdles championship with 13.78 seconds.

- Kyree Johnson of Huntington won the 400 meters in 47.94 seconds. He also helped his team win the 4x400 relay in 3:15.00.

- Bethany Cripps from Central Square won the pole vault championship with a clearance at 12-8.

-  Charles Crispi of Monsignor Farrell won the boys pole vault at 14-9.

- Tara Hernandez of North Babylon won the girls 400-meter hurdles title in 1:00.91.

- Tiana Luton from Sweet Home won the girls pentathlon with 3,541 points (14.70 100H, 5-5.25 HJ, 31-6 SP, 17-3.50 LJ, 2:28.16 800).

- Mike Palmer of Maine-Endwell won the boys boys pentathlon with 3,516 points (14.91 110H, 6-6.75 HJ, 38-11.75 SP, 19-11.75 LJ, 4:45.14 1,500 meters).

- The Mamaroneck girls ran US#2 8:54.33 to win the 4x800 relay, setting themselves up for a prime slot at New Balance Nationals.

- Hauppage ran U#9 7:41.29 to win the state title in the boys 4x800 relay.

- Paul Robeson, running without Alyssa Sandy or Amanda Crawford, won the 4x100 relay with 47.23 seconds.

- South Shore, a team with just one senior, broke the state meet record in the 4x100 relay with 40.90 seconds.

- West Bablyon's girls won the 4x400 with 3:50.06.

- Alexis Daniels of Binghampton won the girls discus with 134-6. She also won the shot put with 46-5.

- Sam Wray of Starpoint broke the state meet record in the boys discus with a toss of 193-8. 

- Jyles Etienne of Stony Brook made it over the bar at 6-10. He went out trying to clear 7-0.50.

- Sarah Kowpak of Archbishop Molloy won the girls high jump title with 5-8.

- Lanae-Tava Thomas of Rush-Henrietta won jumped a wind-aided 20-8 to in the division title on Friday and then won the long jump championship with 20-4 on Saturday.

- Colin Blair of Lancaster won the boys shot put title with 62-4.25.

- Denisha West of Westbury won the girls triple jump with 39-3.25.

- Tobi Tella of McQuaid Jesuit jumped 49-11 to win the triple jump championship after going 50-10.75w to win his division championship.

- Huntington's boys, led by Tucker and Johnson, won the Federation team title with 46 points. Rush-Henrietta, led by the tandem of Watson and Thomas, won the girls championship with 55 points.
