Alabama

 

Check out Arthur L. Mack's coverage of the Mobile Challenge of Champions, where the boys of Baker AL and the girls from Ocean Springs MS came out on top.

 

  

Alaska

 

Freshman Sadie Tuckwood from Juneau Douglas put the hammer down at the Jack Eddy Invitational in Petersburg, Alaska and posted the state's fastest time with 18:28.8. It was Tuckwood's second race of the season and she won the race by a minute and a half. 

 

 

Arizona

 

At the Chandler Invitational, which is structured around flighted class races, Chandler sophomore Morgan Foster logged the fastest time for the girls at the Tumbleweed Park with 18:45. Junior Carson Klepinger of Mountain View Mesa was the fastest of the boys with 16:04. 

 

 

Arkansas

 

Camren Fischer, a sophomore from Fayetteville, got his 2016 campaign off to a strong start by running 15:49.2 for 11th place at the Marcus I Invitational in Texas on Saturday. Fischer was the runner-up in the Arkansas 7A state meet last fall. 

 

 

California

 

DyeStatCAL was on-site at several big early season tune-up meets in Southern California over the weekend.

 Colorado

 

The Cheyenne Mountain Stampede, which takes place on the state meet course at the Norris Penrose Equestrian Center in Colorado Springs, saw runners test their fitness in a spot they hope to return to on Oct. 28. 

The Palmer boys won a tight team battle in Class 5A with 83 points. Legend and Grand Junction both scored 95 points and Poudre was fourth with 96. 

The fastest time of the day came from Air Academy senior Ethan Powell in the 4A race as he clocked 15:55.2 to edge out Maximilliano Martinez of Widefield (15:56).

Liberty senior Allison Mann ran 18:41.4, improving her time by more than 90 seconds over last year's meet. Coronado scored 47 points to win the 5A team title.

  

 

Florida

 

The DyeStatFL crew was on hand at the Holy Trinity Cross Country Classic, where Amanda Beach of Melbourne Central Catholic had a great early season performance and ran 17:47.6.

It was also a good outing for The Bolles School at the Bale-N-Trail Cross Country Original in Jacksonville, where the team edged out Lawton Chiles 56 to 70.

 

 

Georgia

 

Junior Jacob McLeod of Trinity Christian traveled across state lines to Jacksonville FL for the Bale-N-Trail Cross Country Original and won the varsity boys race in 15:39.0.  In Tennessee, Lauren Flynt of Brookwood ran 18:42.9 for sixth place at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic.

 

 

Idaho

 

Junior Siyad Matan of Borah ran 15:52.65 to lead his team to a miniscule 19 points at the Camels Back Classic in Boise. Meanwhile, sophomore Eve Jensen from Boise got her season started right with an 18:22.2 at the Caldwell Twilight. Freshman teammate Molly Elliott was second in 18:32.7.

Also, at the Bandanna Jimmy Driscoll Invitational a week prior, Mountain View's girls stepped out with 20 points. There were two freshmen and two sophomores in the top five.

 

  

Illinois

 

DyeStatIL editor Mike Newman recapped the details from meets all over the state in his weekend recap.

Kudos to Sarah Schmitt of Naperville North, who ripped 33 seconds off her 2015 time to win the Pleasant Valley Spartan Invitational in Iowa. Schmitt ran second on the team behind Judy Pendergast last year.

 

 

Indiana

 

Curtis Eckstein of Oldenburg Academy is out of the gates quick. He won his fourth race of the season at the Columbus North Classic, running 15:10.7. He won the small-school race by 47 seconds. Junior Gabe Fendel of Hamilton Southeastern won the Marion Invitational in 15:20.8. On the girls side, Abby Green of Carroll (Ft. Wayne), a sophomore, ran an impressive winning time of 17:46.4.

 

 

Iowa

 

At the Pleasant Valley Spartan Classic, Patrick Bose of Johnston won a big early season test and beat Edina MN's Patrick Roos, 16:00 to 16:08. Bose won the race for the second straight year.

 

 

Kansas

 

The big meet of the weekend was the Greg Wilson Invitational in Overland Park, where Shawnee Mission Northwest junior Molly Born demonstrated her fitness by running 17:57.3 for 5,000 meters and winning the girls race by 44 seconds. 

 

 

Kentucky

 

Senior Alex Mortimer of Tates Creek ran 15:55.6 for 5K at the Henry Clay/Tanner Duke Invitational in Lexington. He took the victory by 49 seconds. Michaela Reinhart of Lexington Catholic, meanwhile, ran 18:08.6 at the Shelby County Invitational and won by a minute and 26 seconds. There was more good news in second place, where 2014 Foot Locker finalist Gabriella Karas of Collins was back after injury.

 

 

Maryland

 

Rohann Asfaw of Richard Montgomery won the 3-mile boys race at the Interstate Classic in Clear Spring in 15:36.1. He was 31 seconds clear at the finish. 

At the Seahawk Invitational, junior Hunter Petrik of Mount Saint Joseph (15:38.2) and Reilly Caldwell of Middletown (18:25.3) were the winners.

 

  

Michigan

 

Anne Forsyth of Ann Arbor Pioneer, a junior, won the Gold Race at the A2 Running Co. Saline Hornet Early Bird Cross Country Meet by 20 seconds in 17:56.0. 

Mitchell Day from Alpena ran 15:49.74 to lead Alpena to a 37-point total and win at the Dwayne Rau Memorial Invitational. Sault Ste. Marie from the UP won the girls team title with 23 points.

 

  

Minnesota

 

In a big early season showdown on the guys' side, Alex Miley of Maple Grove edged out Seth Eliason of Hopkins 16:00 to 16:01 at the St. Olaf Showcase. Miley and Eliason were seventh and sixth, respectively, at the Minnesota state meet last year.

Emily Covert, a sophomore from Minneapolis Washburn, ran 18:39.7 for second at the Columbus Catholic Invitational.

 

 

Mississippi

 

Starkville standout Kate Mattox got her senior season into high gear with a big victory at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic in Tennessee. The Mississippi champ (many times over) ran 18:08.91 for the win. That was 32 seconds faster than she ran it last year.

 

 

Missouri

 

Victor Mugeche of Blue Springs nosed out Clayton Adams of Kearney 15:36.7 to 15:37 at the Greg Wilson Invitational in Kansas. Mugeche and Adams finished seventh and fourth, respectively, in the 2015 Missouri Class 4 championship race. They are two of the top three returners in the state.

 

 

Montana

 

Marshall Beatty from Sentinel crushed the field at the Coaches Invitational in Missoula, clocking 15:04.5 for three miles and beating his nearest competitors by 74 seconds. Ella Degrandpre of Hellgate ran 18:35.9 to win the girls race by 78 seconds.

 

  

 

Nebraska

 

Seth Hirsch from Millard West rolled to a big win at the Omaha Burke Invitational, running 15:11.6 to take the win by 70 seconds. He led his team to 26 points and the team victory as well. 

At the Cambridge Invitational, Madison Lambrey of Dundy Country Stratton ran 18:36 for a 54-second win over her younger sister, Sable.

 

 

 

Nevada

 

At the Palo Verde Labor Day Classic, the Centennial girls served notice with 24 points to take the junior-senior race. Alexis Gourrier came out on top in 19:37.5. Green Valley won the boys team title with 47 points, while Ian Jackson of Arbor View was the top overall finisher in 16:44.4.

 

 

New Mexico

 

Sophomore Kashon Harrison of Kirtland Central ran 15:33.9 for an impressive win at the University of New Mexico Lobo Cross Country Invitational. Amanda Mayoral of Cleveland won the girls race in 19:09.8.

 

 

New York

 

At the Washingtonville Invitational, Hannah Mellino led a 1-2 finish for Cornwall Central with 18:25.8 as the Dragons scored 27 points. Jayson Hines of Kingston ran 15:56.1 for the victory in the boys varsity race. 

 

 

North Carolina

 

At Saturday's Jungle Run in Hope Mills, Todd Holbrook and John Tatter went 1-2 in 15:32.5 and 15:33.1 for R.J. Reynolds. Sophomore Natalie Tyner of Laney ran 17:58.3 to win by 43 seconds.

 

  

Ohio

 

In a great boys race at the Hot Summer Bash at Hilliard Davidson, junior Dustin Horter of Lakota East nosed out Matt Scrape of Pickerington Central 15:18.6 to 15:18.7 for the top 5K times in the state so far. India Johnson of Hilliard Davidson dipped under 18 minutes to win the girls race (17:59.7). 

 

 

Oklahoma

 

Jenks senior Matt Young got his season off to a strong start at the Marcus I Invitational in Texas, placing fourth in a huge field in 15:31.7. 

 

 

 

Oregon

 

Junior Jerik Embleton of Marist stripped nearly a minute off his 2015 time at Fern Ridge Reservoir for The Invitational, taking the 5K win in 15:37.5. Central Catholic held off South Eugene 42-46 in an early clash between top 6A teams. 

Sophomore Ginger Murnieks of Sheldon ran an impressive 18:04.9 to take the win on the girls side. Sheldon scored 37 points to take the team win.

At the Nike Bill Chapman Invitational in Hillsboro, Jesuit's Joshua Schumacher ran 16:02 and led the Crusaders to a 19-point total. 

 

 

Pennsylvania

 

Sophomore David Endres of Central Bucks East ran 15:49.3 to win the Northhampton Invitational. He won by 13 seconds.

At the Lions Invitational, the highlight came in the girls varsity race, where Katie Dammer of Abington Heights edged out Raisa Kochmaruk of Liberty (Bethlehem) 18:06.9 to 18:07. 

 

 

Rhode Island

 

David Principe Jr. of La Salle paced himself to 15 minutes flat for 5,000 meters to win the Injury Fund Carnival in East Greenwich. He won his race by 85 seconds. The fastest female performance came from Eleanor Lawler of South Kingstown, who ran 18:33.8.

 

 

South Carolina

 

At the Fight Like Wyatt Invitational in Piedmont, John Ward of Wade Hampton ran 16:12.5 to secure a two-second victory over Woodmont's Colt Griffith. Mauldin scored 47 points to win the team title. 

Freshman Jessie Crowley of Riverside ran 19:21.7 to win the girls race and lead her team to the victory with 40 points.

 

 

Tennessee

 

Titus Winders of Henry County, a junior, ran 15:21.2 for a big early season victory at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic. Winders ran 76 seconds faster than he did in the same meet last year, when he was 10th. Ella Baran of Houston TN was the runner-up in the girls race in 18:30.1.

 

 

Texas

 

At the Marcus I Invitational, Southlake Carroll's boys got off on the right foot by scoring 58 points. Up front, senior Reed Brown took the victory in 15:14.5. Sophomore Alex Maier of Lewisville Flower Mound was right on his heels and took second in 15:16.5. 

Ashton Endsley of Abilene ran 17:47.5 to take the girls victory. She, too, was pursued by a sophomore. Adoette Vaughan of Hockaday (SPC) ran 17:52.8 for a new PR.

 

 

Utah 

 

Timpanogos scored 29 points and Joe Benson covered three miles in 15:12.8 at the Utah County Invitational. Aidan Troutner of Timpview was second in 15:23.6. Madison Moffitt ran 19:09.6 to win the girls race for Timpanogos, which also won the team title.

At the BYU Invitational, Davis swept the team titles. Individually, Ryan Raff of Lehi won the (3-mile) boys race in 15:14.3 and Kate Hunter of Provo won the girls race in 18:11.4. 

 

 

Vermont

 

Seniors Tyler Marshall and Sophia Gorman of Champlain Valley both ran to first place at the Essex Cross Country Invitational. Marshall ran 16:05.3 on the 5K course and Gorman ran 19:15.2. Champlain Valley's boys edged South Burlington 45-46 for the team title and the CVU girls won handily with 30 points.

 

 

West Virginia

 

TaShala Turner led University to a 1-2-3-4 finish at the Interstate Classic in Maryland, running a winning time of 18:39. She won by 72 seconds and it was her third win in three races. University scored 17 points. 

 

 

Wisconsin

 

In a big early season showdown between the top two boys in the state, Foot Locker finalist Finn Gessner used a strong late push to stay in front of Gus Newcomb at the Verona Invitational as they went 15:18 to 15:18.9. Gessner of Madison La Follette is the reigning state champion. Newcomb, from Middleton, was fifth last year. They both ran under the course record held by Olin Hacker

At the Neenah Invitational, Tannor Wagner of Ashwaubenon sped to 15:15.3 and won by 38 seconds.

Cami Davre of Whitefish Bay scored a big win at the Columbus Catholic Invitational, winning the girls race in 18:34.
