Alabama

Although Tennessee schools Brentwood and Brentwood Academy stole the show in the boys team race, Alabama power Hoover took third (113) and beat in-state rival Mountain Brook (160) at the Chickasaw Trails Invitational. Hoover was third and Mountain Brook second, respectively, at last year's Alabama Class 7A state meet. Sophomore Will Stone of Homewood dipped under 16 minutes on the state meet course and placed seventh in 15:59.6.

Freshman Lainey Phelps of Homewood was second in the girls race in 18:40.5. Mountain Brook, the 13-time Alabama state champion, finished second to Brentwood Academy TN.

 

  

Alaska

Freshman Kendall Kramer of West Valley beat the three-time defending Class 3A/2A/1A champion Briahna Gehlach of Glennallen 18:54 to 19:05 at the Delta Invitational. It was Kramer's third straight victory. Jacob Moos of Galena won by 50 seconds in the boys race, in 16:26.

Arizona

When the dust settled at the Desert Solstice in Tucscon, the Desert Vista girls had put five girls across the line in less than 18:18. The two-flighted race (odds and evens) also featured a stellar run from Rio Rico state champion Allie Schadler, who ran 17:01.8. She won her race by 18 seconds over Xavier Prep's Sarah Carter (17:19.8) and sophomore Abi Archer of Chaparral was 31 seconds back at 17:32.7.

Junior Aron Orar from Phoenix Central clocked the fastest time in either of the varsity boys races, taking the win in 15:33.6. Orar ran 93 seconds faster than he did in the same meet last year.

 

 

Arkansas

Bentonville's girls, the reigning Arkansas 7A champions, placed fifth in the Green Division at the Forest Park Cross Country Festival in St. Louis. The Bentonville boys placed seventh.

 

 

California

Talented sophomores are popping out of the wood work in California in recent weeks. Claudia Lane of Malibu ran the No. 3 time in the history of the Seaside Cross Country Invitational, covering three miles in 16:25 for the win. Despite holding out its top runners, Great Oak swept the the team titles in Ventura. PHOTOS

Elsewhere, at Rosemead, Chloe Arriaga of  Walnut ran 16:01.5 in the sweepstakes race and broke the sophomore class meet record on a fast 2.92-mile course. Loyola senior Charlie Sherman torched the course to the tune of 14:10.4 to win the boys race.

This week is a big one in California as many of the top teams head to the Woodbridge Classic.

Colorado

In a big early season clash at the St. Vrain Invitational in Lyons, Mountain Vista’s boys edged Monarch 71-72 thanks to significant advantages at No. 4 and No. 5. It was Monarch’s Isaac Green leading up front, however, and running 15:49 to edge out Air Academy’s Ethan Powell (also 15:49).

Led by three freshmen, Mountain Vista’s girls scored 84 points to outpace Rio Rancho. Ninth graders Jenna Fitzsimmons, Sarah O’Sullivan and Madison Reed all placed in the top 20. Sophomore Quinn McConnell from Peak to Peak Charter ran 18:15 for the win. Denver North’s Kayla Young was second, 17 seconds back.

At the Liberty Bell Invitational, Brie Oakley of Grandview pulled off a big win over Fort Collins star Lauren Gregory, 16:44 to 16:52, which were sensational times for both. Oakley was the 5A 1,600 and 3,200 champion in the spring but Gregory is the three-time reigning state cross country champion.

Rock Canyon CO edged Albuquerque Academy NM 94-97 for the boys team win. 

 

 

Connecticut

Brendan Murray from Cheshire ran 16:12 and Hayley Collins from Tolland ran 18:33 for the top times at the Haddad Windham Invitational in Willimantic.

 

 

Delaware

Up in New Jersey at the Cherokee Challenge, Keelin Hays of Tatnall won the sophomore class flighted race, covering two miles in 11:48. That was the third-fastest time recorded overall at the meet. Tatnall's Brendan Balthis won the sophomore boys race in 10:14. Meanwhile, Salesianum had a strong showing as well, led by George Steinhoff's fourth place 10:12 in the senior race.

Tosin Ibironke of Smyrna was the top finisher at the Lake Forest Cross Country Festival, running 16:58.2. Naomi Bowser of Smyrna was second in the girls race.

 

 

District of Columbia

The Sidwell Friends boys won the team title at the Lake Forest Cross Country Festival at Killen Ponds State Park in Delaware. The girls team placed second.

 

 

Florida

Amanda Beach from Melbourne Central Catholic won the Astronaut Invitational in 18:19.6 in a performance that was the fastest across the state during the weekend. Satellite's boys and girls teams swept the team titles at the meet, which was held in Titusville. PHOTOS | VIDEOS

Fort Myers Hoptar Invitational

 

 

Georgia

Sam Bowers of Milton was the top finisher at the Double Dip Invitational in Atlanta, completing the 5K course in 16:13.8. Marist scored 36 points for the team win while Milton was second.

Anna Marian Block of Athens Academy won the girls varsity race in 18:35.1 -- 10 seconds in front of Kaylee DuPont of South Forsyth and Liz Galarza of West Forsyth.

 

 

Idaho

Austin Byrer from Lewiston beat Borah's Siyad Matan 15:55.5 to 15:56.4 in a close finish at the Timberlake Farragut Invitational in Athol. Borah went 2-3-4 and edged Lewiston for the team crown 57 to 60. 

Katherine Ruck of Moscow dominated the girls race, winning it in 18:39.9. Capital scored 58 points for the win.

 

  

Illinois

The weekend was dominated by the First To The Finish Invitational at Detweiler Park in Peoria. As DyeStatIL editor Mike Newman explains, wet and muddy conditions made for a gritty cross country competition as the desire for fast times went out the window. RECAP | PHOTOS by Laura Duffy

 

 

Indiana

Junior Gabe Fendel of Hamilton Southeastern won the Wildcat Invitational in Marion with 15:46.4 and led his team to a victory wtih 44 points.  Parker Jones of Pendleton Heights and sophomore Brennan Butche of Mississinewa also broke 16 minutes. Hamilton Southeastern also won the girls team title but star of the race was Dekalb junior Tyler Schwartz, who won by 53 seconds in 17:34.1.

 

 

Iowa

Patrick Bose from Johnston won his home invitational last Thursday in 16:23.8 as he continues to rack up victories. Jessica McKee led a 1-2-3-4-5 for Johnston on the girls side.

 

 

Kansas

Alex Gill led St. Thomas Aquinas to the team victory at the Forest Park Cross County Festival in St. Louis. The wet course yielded slower times than usual, but STA posted a dominant win with 81 points. 

Photographer Dwayne Fuhlhage captured the splashing at the Olathe North Invitational, where an overflowed creek caused some havoc on the course.

 

 

Maryland

Joey Navarro of Oakland Mills won the 3-mile race at the Howard County Invitational in 16:06.4 as Severna Park won the team title with 99 points. Courtney Mann of Howard ran 19:24.3 to win the girls varsity race and River Hill scored 59 points to win the team competition.

 

  

Michigan

Mitchell Day of Alpena ran a state leading time of 15:26 at the Lancer Invitational at Stratford Woods. He won by 40 seconds. Saginaw Heritage outlasted Traverse City West, 64-67.

Freshman Anna Jensen from Midland Dow led a 1-2-3 finish for her team and won the girls race by nearly a minute with 18:37.7.

 

 

Minnesota

Seth Eliason of Hopkins nosed out Matt Wilkinson of Minnetonka by two-tenths of a second (in 15:39.32) at the Bauman/Rovn Invitational at Gale Woods Farm. Those two finished 52 seconds ahead of third place. Minnetonka beat Hopkins, though, 34-75.

Willmar's girls had a strong performance, scoring 56 points to beat Eden Prairie (76) and Marshall (82). Anastasia Korzenowski of Chanhassen won the girls race in 18:25.1 and then came a 2-3-4 finish for Willmar, led by Sophie Schmitz.

 

 

Missouri

The Forest Park Cross Country Festival, one of the state's biggest meets, was slowed by rain-soaked course conditions.  Ben Naeger of Ste. Genevieve placed second overall in 16:29.9 and Victor Mugeche of Blue Springs was third in 16:33.7. John Luder was seventh overall and led Rockhurst to second place behind St. Thomas Aquinas of Kansas. 

Junior Victoria Findley from Blue Springs South won the top girls race in 19:30.3. Blue Springs South won a very competitive girls competition with 153 points. Fatima was second with 168. 

 

Montana

Annie Hill of Glacier starred at the Flathead Invitational, cruising to a 3-mile victory in 17:15.6. She won by 50 seconds and ran 33 seconds faster than she did at the same meet in 2015. Marshall Beatty of Sentinel ran 15:08 and beat a field that included talented sophomore Ben Perrin of Flathead, who was second in 15:33.4. 

In Sheridan, Wyo., Billings Senior sophomore Tiahna Vladic ran 17:41.9 on a difficult 5K course at the Michelle Ludwig Memorial Invitational.

 

Nebraska

Clayton Adams of Kearney won the featured Green Division boys race at the Forest Park Cross Country Festival in St. Louis, covering the wet 5K course in 16:23.8 seconds. 

 

 

Nevada

The Centennial girls, paced up front by Alexis Gourrier, scored a scant 33 points to win the Larry Burgess-Las Vegas Invitational at Sunset Park. Gourrier won the meet for the second year in a row, and ran 17:34.7. Teammates Karina Haymore, Kayla Roberts and Delani Dietrich were 5-7-9.

Omar Rubio of Green Valley won the large school boys race in 15:14.7, edging out Frankie Bisacky of Durango (15:16.0). Page of Arizona won the team title. And the fastest time of the day belonged to Hurricane UT's Caleb Armstrong, who ran 15:08.

New Jersey

The big news in the state comes Tuesday when CBA puts its decades-long dual meet winning streak on the line (343) against a strong Colts Neck team. 

At the Randolph Invitational, the North Hunterdon boys and Randolph girls were victorious after both scored 44 points in the Varsity Group A races. Abby Loveys of Randolph, a sophomore, ran 19:18.3 for a 33-second victory and the fastest time of the day. Ryan Martins of Watchung Hills Regional ran 16:20.3 for the Group A boys win.

Alyssa Aldridge of Mainland Regional was the fastest girl of the day at the 3,200-meter Cherokee Challenge, running 11:47.1. Kevin Fox of Moorestown ran 10:02 to lead all of the boys finishers.

 

 

New Mexico

Albuquerque Academy's Jordan Lesansee got a big win at the Liberty Bell Invitational in Colorado, running 15:18 and leading his team to a narrow 94-97 team victory.

 

 

New York

The reigning NXN champion Fayetteville-Manlius girls got the season started with a victory at the Chittenago Invitational. Freshman Claire Walters ran away from the field and posted a time of 18:38.5. Tully eighth grader Brooke Rauber was second in 18:51.3. F-M then swept the next four spots with Rebecca Walters, Phoebe White, Sophie Ryan and Palmer Madsen.

At Warwick Wave Mania, senior Ryan Gallagher from Briarcliff ran 15:55.8 to post the fastsest time of the day. Warwick Valley swept the Varsity 1 team titles. Olivia Elston from Goshen Central ran 18:36 for a 45-second win in the Varsity 2 race and was the fastest girl at the meet.

 

 

North Carolina

Connor Lane of Cardinal Gibbons won the Knights Crossing Invitational in Salem, Va., clocking 15:21. In a battle of top North Carolina teams, however, it was Green Hope getting the upper hand on Cardinal Gibbons for the boys team title, 81-98. 

At the Friday Night Lights in Kernersville, US#1 Nevada Mareno ran 18:04.4 and won the girls 5K race by 74 seconds. Behind her, Green Hope went 2-3-4-5-6 on the way to a dominant 20-point score.

 

 

North Dakota

Karly Ackley of Grand Forks Central was sensational at the Nike Heartland Preview, running 17:21.7 on the NXN regional course at Yankton Trail Park. Grand Forks Central also competed well against some of the top teams in Minnesota, taking third with 65 points after putting three runners in the top eight. 

 

 

Ohio

Hunter Moore of Olentangy Orange ran 15:13 at the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival. Hunter was 17th in the B race as a freshman, 11th as a sophomore and eighth as a junior. He was 30 seconds faster on Saturday than he was at the meet a year ago. Solon's boys scored 65 points for a decisive team victory.

Felicia Pasadyn of Brunswick Senior won the Div 1 A girls race in 18:28.5. St. Joseph Academy pulled out the girls team victory with 170 points. 

 

 

Oregon

Ahmed Muhumed of West Salem, the reigning Class 6A state champion, ran a sensational time of 15:14 on the Tualatin Invitational course. He won by 31 seconds. 

Kate Intile of Tualatin ran 18:39 on her home course to win the varsity girls race by 68 seconds.

 

 

Pennsylvania

Brothers Noah and Sam Affolder went 1-3 for their new team at Carlisle at the PTXC 8 in Kutztown. Noah won the 5K race in 15:58.1. However, Loudoun Valley (Drew Hunter's old school) edged out Carlisle for the team title, 80-84.

At the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, Nick Feffer led State College to the team title with his overall win in 16:11 on the Penn State course. 

 

 

South Dakota

Junior Derick Peters from West Central ran 15:16.3 for 5,000 meters at the Nike Heartland Preview, crushing the field and winning by a full minute. Peters ran 53 seconds faster than he did last year when he was third. Sioux Falls Christian won the boys team title with 58 points.

  

 

Tennessee

At the Chickasaw Trails Invitational in Alabama, Brentwood’s boys put on a tremendous display of pack running up front. Brodey Hasty led a 1-2-3-4 finish as Taylor Vroon, Scott Thompson and Jackson Vroon all stuck within four seconds of him (15:30.69 to 15:34.88). Fifth runner Quinn Heithcock, a sophomore, was 21st and a minute behind the others.

Claire Cheeseman of Brentwood Academy controlled the girls varsity race and won it in 18:06.9. 

 

 

Texas

The Woodlands boys put together a strong 15-point performance at the Texas Region 3 Preview, putting all five scorers across the line between the 15:33 of winner Noah Wells and the 15:56 of fifth man Ethan Mercado

Also, at the Southlake Carroll Invitational, Daniel Bernal led El Paso Eastwood to a team victory with his own sensational run of 15:08.7. He edged super soph Alex Maier of Flower Mound, who ran 15:09.7. 

Frisco Liberty beat Herbon and Marcus to take the girls team title. Freshman Gracie Morris of Aledo picked up the individual win in 18:22.1.

Freshman Eleanor Villarreal of Taylor had a breakout 17:18.5 time for 5K at the PFISD meet. 

 

 

Utah 

Talon Hull of Weber won the Murray Invitational (2.95 miles), edging out Ogden's Garrett Barton by a second, in 14:02.6. It was Davis taking the team title over Ogden 85-96 in a clash between state powers. 

On the girls side of things, American Fork beat Davis 95-116 in a deep and talented race. Whitney Rich of Bingham continued the hot start to her season with a victory in 16:40.7. Julie Sumison of Springville was second in 16:54.5.

At the Larry Burgess-Las Vegas Invitational, Caleb Armstrong of Hurricane won the small-school varsity boys race in 15:08 for the fastest time of the day there.

 

 

Vermont

Jeremy Hoyne-Grosvenor of Montpelier won the Burlington Invitational in 16:30.6. Emma Farrington of Essex was the girls varsity winner in 20:39.4.

 

 

Virginia

Heather Holt from George Marshall ran an impressive time of 17:27 to win by 55 seconds at the Monroe Parker Invitational. The course was 2.98 miles. 

Saurav Velleleth of Thomas Jefferson S&T edged out Conor Lyons of Lake Braddock 15:29 to 15:30 in the boys varsity race. Lake Braddock swept the team titles (Kate Murphy did not run).

At the PTXC 8 in Kutztown, Pa., Loudoun Valley picked up a big team with with 80 points. Peter Morris and Colton Bogucki finished second and fifth overall and two of Drew Hunter's brothers contributed to the team win.

 

 

Washington

At the Tracy Walters Invitational in Spokane, Amir Ado of Ferris edged out Hayden Dressel of Mt. Spokane and North Central beat Kamiakin 105-148 to win the team title. Ado ran 15:56 for the victory and finished a second up on Dressel. 

Silas Griffith from Ridgefield won the Ash Creek XC Festival in Monmouth, Ore., registering a 5K time of 15:47.6.

 

 

West Virginia

The University girls, led by overall winner TaShala Turner, won the team title at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State. Turner ran 18:46 and University went 1-4-7-11 on the way to 35 points.

Phillip White of University ran 16:12 and was second, just one second behind the winner. White led his team to a third place team finish.

 

 

Wisconsin

Gus Newcomb from Middleton led his team to the victory at the Arrowhead Invitational by winning the varsity boys race in 15:30.7. The team put three more runners in the top 13 on the way to 59 points. 

Cami Davre of Whitefish Bay got a 22-second victory with 18:36.4 in the girls race. Divine Savior Holy Angels won the girls meet with 77 points.

 

 

Wyoming 

Jackson Hole's girls, led by a 3-5 finish for senior Anna Gibson and freshman Mattie Geddes, won the Division 1 team title at Colorado's Liberty Bell Invitational. Gibson ran all alone in third place. She was 40 seconds behind Colorado champions Brie Oakley and Lauren Gregory and a full minute ahead of fourth place, clocking 17:31.
