According to rankings compiled by All-Athletics.com – the official data partner of the IAAF Diamond League – five of the top meets in the world this past year were held in Oregon. The rankings are based on actual results and the level of performers at each meet with a bonus for world records. So, without further ado, here are the official 2016 numbers in three different categories with the total number of meets in parentheses: INVITATIONAL/ONE-DAY COMPETITIONS (597) No. 1 – 42nd annual Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field MULTI-DAY COMPETITIONS (353) No. 2 – U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field at Hayward Field No. 4 – NCAA Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field INDOOR COMPETITIONS (681) No. 1 – IAAF World Indoor Championships at Oregon Convention Center in Portland No. 3 – USATF Indoor Championships at Oregon Convention Center in Portland This was the sixth consecutive season in which the Pre Classic was rated No. 1 or No. 2 in the world for single-day meets. In multi-day competitions, only the Rio Olympics ranked higher than the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field and the European Championships finished ahead of the NCAAs. Two other meets in Oregon achieved notable rankings. The inaugural TrackTown Summer Series at Hayward Field, which received rave reviews for its innovative format, was rated 26th in the world out of nearly 600 Invitational meets. The TTSS featured 23 Olympians, an historic athlete draft, team scoring, coed 4x400-meter relay and prize money and additional benefits worth more than a half-million dollars to the 144 participating athletes.
Similarly, the fourth and final High Performance meet at the “House of Track” in Portland was ranked 46th out of 681 indoor competitions. More than 1,600 fans showed up to watch the competition unfold in a previously vacant warehouse. The athletes ran on the same green 200-meter banked oval track that would later be taken apart and reassembled for use at the USATF Indoor Championships and IAAF World Indoor Championships.
