The Laureus World Sports Awards have announced the addition of a new category for Best Sporting Moment of the Year at the annual ceremony scheduled for Feb. 14 in Monaco. The award was created to recognize the sports moment that resonated most with fans.
Among the six nominees are American Abbey D’Agostino and New Zealand’s Nikki Hamblin for their demonstration of the Olympic spirit in the women’s 5,000 meters in Rio de Janeiro. After both athletes fell during their preliminary heat, they helped each other to the finish line and embraced one another after the race. Brothers and British triathletes Alistair Brownlee and Jonny Brownlee were also nominated. During the conclusion of the Triathlon World Series in Mexico, Jonny was helped across the finish line by his brother. The Best Sporting Moment of the Year nominees join the finalists for Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Action Sportsperson, Sportsperson with a Disability, Team of the Year, along with breakthrough and comeback performances.
