IAAF to Consider Moving Away from Championship Bidding ProcessPublished by
Strategic Championship Location Selection Comes Into ViewBy Scott Bush, DyeStat Editor In a move that would shake up how world championship sites are awarded, discussion has begun to take place around the IAAF getting rid of the bidding process and taking a more strategic approach to selecting which cities would host the World Track and Field Championships and World Indoor Track and Field Championships. "We have five major opportunities in a decade to showcase athletics," IAAF president Sebastian Coe told Inside the Games. "We therefore need to be in places that can help us grow our sport." Coe will move forth in proposing the bidding changes, in some compacity, at the IAAF council meeting this week in Monaco. The next three World Track and Field Championships take place in London (2017), Doha (2019) and Eugene (2021) respectively, with the 2018 World Indoor Track and Field Championships taking place in Birmingham, Great Britain.
