Preps Win This Week's Honors With World U-20 Record Performances

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Armand "Mondo Duplantis

With 31.14 percent of the vote, Armand "Mondo" Duplantis won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Lauren Harris and her second-place tally of 24.55 percent.

Duplantis continued his record-setting indoor season, becoming the first high school male athlete to clear 19 feet in the pole vault at New Balance Nationals Indoor at The Armory in New York City. The high school junior from Lafayette LA cleared 19-1 (5.82m) on his third attempt, having cleared all previous heights on his first attempts.

In addition to the high school record Duplantis broke, he broke the NBNI record, The Armory building record, the world U-20 record and the Swedish national indoor record. Possibly most important in the Duplantis family, he has now bested his father, Greg Duplantis, who competed professionally in the pole vault for 10 years with a best of 19-0.25 (5.80m).

Editors’ Choice: Trey Cunningham

Trey Cunningham, the high school senior from Winfield AL, came into New Balance Nationals Indoor having already bested the world U-20 and high school records in the 60-meter hurdles with a 7.49 performance at January's Last Chance Invitational in Birmingham, AL. However, the Florida State University-bound Cunningham still had more in his tank for the final meet of his senior indoor season.

Running in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles Saturday, Cunningham ran 7.45 to again break the world U-20 and high school records. He followed that up with a 7.51 clocking in the semifinals Sunday. Then in the final, Cunningham gave it everything, crossing the line in 7.40. In the span of six weeks, he has taken 0.1 seconds off the world U-20 record and 0.13 seconds off the high school record. Cunningham also has six of the top eight prep performances ever, including the best four, all from this season.
