Texas A&M's Lindon Victor Sets Collegiate Best for Day 1 Decathlon Score at Texas Relays

Before Wednesday, Ashton Eaton owned the collegiate best for the first day score in the decathlon. Now, that honor belongs to Lindon Victor of Texas A&M.

Competing in his first decathlon of the season at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, Victor compiled 4,516 points, riding the momentum of three personal bests. He long jumped 24-2.25 (7.37m), high jumped 6-10.25 (2.09m) and ran the 400 meters, the final event of the day, in 48.24 seconds.

Eaton's best first day score was 4,500 points, set at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Trey Hardee owns the collegiate decathlon record with 8,446 points, set at the Texas Relays in 2006. His first-day total was 4,402 points.

Hardee started the day, finishing second behind Victor in the 100-meter dash, but he only competed on a limited schedule. He encouraged Victor throughout the day's competition, including providing long jump tips.

Victor leads the competition, with Scott Filip of Rice in second (4,252 points) and Kevin Nielsen of BYU in third (4,064 points). Thursday begins with the 110-meter hurdles.
