Olympic Champion Eliud Kipchoge Named Abbott World Marathon Majors Series X Champion While Women's Champion Held Up By Jemima Sumgong Doping Investigation

The Abbott World Marathon Majors announced the Series X Champions late Monday night. Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the men's championship after decisive victories at the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon and the Olympic Games, including a 2:03:05 clocking in London.

The series championship is awarded for performances over over the past 12 months at some of the world's most prestigious marathon events, including the Tokyo, Boston, Virgin Money London, BWM Berlin, Bank of America Chicago, and TCS New York City Marathons. The Olympic and Paralympic Marathons were also included in this year's results.

The women's championship has been delayed as the current leader, Jemima Sumgong of Kenya, is currently the subject of a doping investigation. The Olympic champion recently tested positive for EPO in an out-of-competition test conducted by the IAAF. The announcement of a women's winner will be held up until the investigation has been resolved.

Series X champions in the inaugural wheelchair division were also announced. Marcel Hug of Switzerland and Tatyana McFadden of the USA were named winners.

In addition to being named champion, Kipchoge will receive $500,000 in prize money. Both Hug and McFadden will receive $50,000. The prize money will be distributed over five years.
