Despite Early Injuries, Gatlin Still Focused on Another National TitlePublished by
Multi-time Olympian prepares to regain top standing in SacramentoBy Scott Bush, DyeStat Editor It's been a slow start to the season for reigning Olympic 100-meter silver medalist Justin Gatlin. Dealing with leg injuries this season, Gatlin recently placed fifth at the Prefontaine Classic in the 100, after running to a fourth-place showing at the Doha Diamond League meeting last month. According to a recent Reuters report, Gatlin will now prepare for the USA Outdoor Championships, bypassing upcoming IAAF Diamond League events in order to be in top shape in Sacramento - where he'll most likely just focus on the 100. One of Gatlin's shining characteristics over the years is his ability to stay healthy, despite grueling travel and competition schedules. There's no question his recent injury woes are wearing on him this time around. "This season is going to test my fortitude mentally and physically probably more than any other season," said the 2004 Olympic champion. Gatlin will no doubt be the favorite to once again win the U.S. title for the 100, but unless he's in tip-top shape, he's going to have plenty of competition around him from the likes of fellow stars Ronnie Baker, Christian Coleman, etc. More news |
