Top High School Performers Are This Week's Performance of the Week Honorees

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Allie Ostrander

With 36.1 percent of the vote, Allie Ostrander won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Raevyn Rogers with her second-place tally of 24.91 percent.

Ostrander competed in her first outdoor season for Boise State after injury derailed her training and racing over the past year, beginning at the end of the 2016 indoor season. And thus, there was a certain amount of shock when Ostrander hurried through the media tent Saturday after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase so that she could prepare for the 5,000 meters.

The steeplechase and 5,000-meter double is not a common occurrence at the NCAA D1 Outdoor Championships. However, Ostrander showed the grit she has become known for, in winning the steeplechase in 9:41.31 and then coming back 90 minutes later to run 15:46.18 for fourth in the 5,000.

Ostrander's time in the steeplechase was a personal best and it bettered the IAAF World Outdoor Championships standard, making her eligible for the World Championships should she run the event at the USATF Outdoor Championships and finish in the top three.

However, in a post-race interview, Ostrander expressed interest in shutting down her season to get ready for cross country. She suffered from two stress fractures in 2016 and it is understandable that she would remain cautious so that she can join her teammates in cross country next fall.

Editors’ Choice: Christian Coleman

This week's Editors' Choice award came down to Christian Coleman of Tennessee and Raevyn Rogers of Oregon. Both athletes played a role in collegiate records during the NCAA D1 Outdoor Championships and both had their hand in winning multiple NCAA titles.

Rogers made waves by winning her fifth NCAA title in the 800 meters. She has not lost an NCAA 800-meter final, indoors or outdoors, since she first won the outdoor title in 2015. Rogers then capped off the meet with a 49.77 anchor split on the Oregon 4x400 relay team. Oregon, and runner-up USC, broke the collegiate record in the event. Oregon ran 3:23.13 and USC finished in 3:23.35. Oregon's 4x400 relay win gave the Ducks the team title and completed the quest for the triple crown of winning cross country, indoor and outdoor in one academic year.

However, this week's award goes to Coleman. The junior has been on a tear this year. He equaled the collegiate record indoors in the 60 meters at the NCAA D1 Indoor Championships. He also won the 200 meters, only 0.01 seconds off the record.

This past weekend in Eugene, Coleman once again won the sprint double, the 100 and 200 meters. His times in the finals were run into a significant headwind, slowing his times. But the real magic came in the semifinal of the 100 meters Wednesday. Coleman blasted out of the blocks and ran away from the field, clocking 9.82 for a new collegiate record, bettering the old record of 9.89 from 2011.

Coleman's time is a world leader. It ranks him the #8 performer in the world all-time and the #4 American all-time. He will not only be one of the favorites in both the 100 and 200 meters at the USATF Outdoor Championships next week, but should he qualify for the IAAF World Outdoor Championships, he is an early favorite to medal.
