American Fork boys win eighth title in nine years, North Summit girls extend streak to five in a row

SALT LAKE CITY -- Aidan Troutner took a legitimate run at an all-time record.

Sadie Sargent validated her place among the elite performers in state history, helping North Summit build on its own dynasty.

Springville celebrated its first boys championship in memorable fashion.

And American Fork extended one of the country's most impressive legacies in the inaugural 6A boys final.

Following the state's greatest showcase at last year's Utah High School Activities Association championship meet, the encore performance Wednesday at Sugarhouse Park and Highland High in Salt Lake City didn't disappoint.

The boys 5A final produced the No. 2 individual effort on the 3-mile course and the second-fastest team time in state history, both resulting in the first championships for Troutner and Springville.

Troutner clocked 14 minutes, 48.8 seconds second only to the 14:42.9 of American Fork star Casey Clinger last year and Springville clocked 77:14, trailing only the all-time mark of 76:31.9 by American Fork last season, to prevail by a 40-65 margin over Timpanogos.

Grant Gardner (14:58.1), Brandon Garnica (15:01.1) and Caleb Garnica (15:21.7) finished second, third and fourth, with Devin Pancake (15:35.3) placing seventh for Springville, which had Zackary Dalley (16:17.8) improve more than 20 spots in the final mile to take 25th.

Despite graduating its top three runners from last year's championship lineup, American Fork won its eighth title in nine years with a 56-88 victory in the 6A final over Herriman.

The Cavemen had Carson Clinger (15:36.1), Dalton Brems (15:38) and Luke Grundvig (15:43.6) place fifth, sixth and ninth, with Cole Phillippi (15:59) in 14th and Kobe Serrano (16:12.5) finishing 22nd to run 79:09, giving American Fork seven of the top 12 performances in meet history.

Fremont seniors Bronson Winter (15:09.3) and Zack Winter (15:17.8) finished first and third in the 6A final, with Lone Peak senior Justin Hartshorn (15:10.9) placing second.

Lehi senior Ryan Raff, fourth last year in 5A, won the 4A title in 14:59.6, helping him join Casey Clinger as the only male athlete in state history to run under 15 minutes twice.

Sargent repeated as 2A girls champion in 17:31.1, the third-fastest all-time performance behind Davis' Courtney Wayment (17:24.7) in 2015 and Ogden's Sarah Feeny (17:25) in 2013.

Sargent, the only female athlete in state history to hold all four grade records in any classification, and runner-up Maggie Zwahlen (18:34.9) helped North Summit capture its fifth consecutive team title with a 36-48 victory over Millard. North Summit also added its first 2A boys crown since 2003 with 36-64 win over Millard.

Weber senior McKenna Lee won the inaugural 6A girls championship, her first title after two straight runner-up finishes, clocking 17:49 to join Herriman's Lucy Biles as the only girls to run under 18 minutes at the state meet three times.

Corner Canyon junior Karli Branch, 20th last year in the 4A final in 19:05, won the 5A title in 17:51.4 to become the 16th girl in state history to break 18 minutes.

Mountain View senior Alissa Fielding also joined that elite sub-18 group by winning the 4A championship in 17:54.3, improving from sixth last season in 18:28.

Pleasant Grove won its first girls title, becoming the inaugural 6A champion with a 78-93 victory over four-time champion American Fork.

Skyline also became a first-time girls champion, securing the 5A crown with a 76-80 win over Maple Mountain.

After capturing the 3A girls title last year, Pine View secured the 4A championship this season by a 60-69 margin over Mountain View.

Stansbury won its first 4A boys championship with an 80-89 triumph over Pine View.

Emery's first 3A boys title was the most thrilling of the meet, prevailing on a sixth-runner tiebreaker again Richfield after the teams tied at 70. Emery's sixth runner finished 32nd overall, six seconds ahead of Richfield in 33rd place.

San Juan won its first girls title since 2009 and third overall, prevailing 67-75 over Juab in the 3A final.

Monticello moved into a tie for second in state history with its 10th 1A boys championship with a 15-22 victory over Panguitch, as the classification only scores a team's top four runners instead of five.

Milford prevailed 23-28 over Panguitch in the 1A girls final to secure its first title since 2006.

Union's Kennedy Powell (18:42) won her second 3A title in three years and Panguitch's Taylia Norris (19:26.8) captured her first 1A championship.

Manti senior Jordan Cheney (16:01.6) won the 3A boys title, North Summit's Cody White (16:18.7) secured the 2A championship and Monticello's Adam Bunker (16:20) captured the 1A crown.
