Notes: The Southeast region has historically had a difficult time matching up with the others across the country. Only Brentwood TN has ever finished higher than 10th at NXN, having finished third in 2013 and 2016. This could be the fall where that all changes. Maybe. One thing is for certain -- for perhaps the first time the NXR Southeast has the most intriguing storylines in the country.

Loudoun Valley has been the top-ranked team all season long and is set to perhaps join Brentwood as a podium team from the Southeast.

Speaking of interesting storylines, the Brentwood club's effort to return to Portland is also compelling. The top boys runners at Brentwood High did not compete for the team but instead remained loyal to private coach Guy Avery. Race opportunities were few and far between, but the top guys, including preseason No. 1 Brodey Hasty, have been training throughout. The group is registered for the regional Saturday. According to NXN guidelines, the Brentwood club is competing within the parameters of its rules, which state that a runner only has to have been eligible to run for their high school team, not that he did. While Brentwood's advancement is a longshot, it is capable of contending for the second automatic berth. A third-place finish by Brentwood would give the at-large selection committee and interesting decision to make given the lack of competition Brentwood has had in 2017, but its success in 2016.

Milton GA has run like a team possessed this season and is the pick for the second NXN spot. Milton burst onto the national scene this year, moving up from preseason No. 25. Green Hope NC could nab the auto bid with a good race and Severna Park ran well to capture the Maryland state title and looks like a contender. Preseason regional No. 2 St. Xavier KY has endured a rocky season with injuries this fall and a return trip to Portland would take a special effort.

Chiles FL

Notes: The Southeast Region lacks the team powerhouse that other regions have this year, but it has strong depth with four nationally ranked teams. Blacksburg VA has qualified for NXN the past four years and given the experience of the team, has a strong likelihood of doing it again. However, there are two strong Florida teams in Chiles and Pine Crest that could upset the form chart.

The parity in the Southeast Region is unlike any other region this year. A good day could be all it takes to earn a place on the start line at NXN. But the opposite is also true, where an off performance not only could keep a team from qualifying, but possibly even dropping out of the top five. Of course, that only adds to the excitement.
