They may have had another winner in 1977 (2 years before Kinney/Foot Locker existed) with Tom Graves.  His credentials include an 8:51.9 2-mile in the 1977 track season as a junior, 3rd (2nd high schooler; same time as 1st & 2nd) in the USA Junior XC meet in Feb. 1978 as a senior and then he was the top US freshman (13th) at the NCAA D1 meet in Nov. 1978. Jim Spivey (15th) was the only other U.S. freshman in the top 50 and Spivey won the 1977 AAU age 17-18 XC Nationals after finishing 2nd to Graves at the Illinois State meet.

There have been 6 non-senior champs (five juniors and a soph). All 5 that returned won the next year - Grant Fisher, Edward Cheserek, Dathan Ritzenhein and Abdirizak Mohamud as seniors & Lukas Verzbicas as a junior. Verzbicas graduated after his junior year win.

 

Girls

There have been 17 non-senior champs. Only 4 have successfully defended the following year – Claudia Lane, Erin Sullivan, Melody Fairchild and Erin Keough. The others had performances ranging from 2nd to 21st, with one DNF and three who didn’t compete. Anna Rohrer won as a sophomore and again as a senior, while Jordan Hasay won as a freshman and again as a senior.
