Ewen regains world lead with 63-foot shot put in New Mexico By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor Arizona State senior Maggie Ewen became only the third female athlete in collegiate history to produce a 63-foot (19.20m) shot put indoors or outdoors, when she reached that prestigious distance Saturday at the New Mexico Don Kirby Invitational at Albuquerque Convention Center. INTERVIEW Ewen, whose previous best was 61-3 (18.67m), regained the world lead from Poland's Paulina Guba after she produced an effort Feb. 4 of 61-5.50 (18.73m). Ewen trails only former Ole Miss star Raven Saunders and Oklahoma graduate Tia Brooks among all-time collegiate performers. She ranks seventh in U.S. history. Ewen also became the only collegiate female thrower in history to achieve a 63-foot shot put and 73-foot indoor weight throw. She produced a lifetime-best 73-0.50 (22.26m) in the second round Friday to win the weight throw and elevate to No. 6 in NCAA Division 1 this year. Oregon's Makenzie Dunmore equaled the No. 3 collegiate performer this season in the 60-meter dash by clocking 7.18, edging San Diego State's Ashley Henderson in 7.19. Teammate Hannah Waller ran a personal-best 52.44 to win the 400, then teamed with Shae Anderson, Briyahna DesRosiers and Dunmore to run 3:30.18 in the 4x400, the second-fastest NCAA Division 1 effort this year. Oregon junior Alaysha Johnson won the women's 60-meter hurdles in 8.13, with Cravon Gillespie capturing the men's 60-meter dash in 6.68 for the Ducks. Colorado State senior Mostafa Hassan, the reigning Division 1 indoor shot put champion, prevailed with an effort of 64-3.25 (19.59m) to elevate to the No. 8 collegiate performer this year. UTEP junior Jonah Koech won the men's mile in 4:01.06, which adjusts to 3:55.81 with the altitude conversion, helping him ascend to No. 3 in Division 1 this year. Canadian pole vaulter Anicka Newell cleared 15-1 (4.60m), Alexa Efraimson prevailed in the women's 800 in 2:03.87 and Dontavius Wright of Altis won the men's 400 in 45.50. More news |
