Stanford Men Set School Record, Take Over Collegiate Lead in Distance Medley RelayPublished by
Stanford leads top 12 collegiate performances at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor The NCAA Division 1 performance list in the men's distance medley relay was significantly rewritten Saturday, and so was the Stanford record book. Sean McGorty, Isaiah Brandt-Sims, Hari Sathyamurthy and Grant Fisher ran the fastest time in Stanford history, clocking 9 minutes, 26.91 seconds at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational to not only take over the collegiate lead, but serve as the catalyst for the top 12 Division 1 performances this year. McGorty was also a member of the old Stanford DMR record quartet, which clocked 9:27.27 at the 2016 Penn State National. He opened by clocking 2:52.9 on the 1,200 leg, with Fisher closing in 3:55.8 on the 1,600 anchor to hold off Oregon's Sam Prakel, as the Ducks clocked 9:27.17. It marked the first time McGorty and Fisher, who have combined for 13 All-America honors, have raced together on a relay. McGorty, a fifth-year senior, was making his indoor season debut after not competing since May on his home track at the Payton Jordan Invitational. Although Notre Dame features an oversized track, Stanford's performance was No. 6 on an indoor surface of any size in Division 1 history. Stanford now boasts the top men's and women's DMR performances in the country entering the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation finals May 24-25 at the Dempsey Indoor facility in Seattle, Wash. Eight of the top 10 women's DMR times in the country were also achieved at Notre Dame, with Eastern Michigan elevating to No. 3 by holding off Indiana by an 11:00.51 to 11:00.77 margin.
