Laura Muir Drops the 800 Meters at the European Athletics Outdoor Championships and Elaine Thompson Ends Her Season After Both Deal with Achilles Problems

By Adam Kopet

There were two athletes who did not fare well coming out of the record-breaking weekend. Laura Muir of Great Britain and Elaine Thompson of Jamaica have both been affected by Achilles problems that have forced them to change their schedules.

Muir has decided to only compete in the 1,500 meters at the European Athletics Outdoor Championships, according to British Athletics. She had originally intended to compete in both the 800 and 1,500 meters, but she was hampered with an Achilles' tendon issue in the London Diamond League mile.

Thompson has decided to end her season after a third-place finish in the Monaco Diamond League 100 meters, according to trackalerts.com. She has been hampered with Achilles problems going back to last year. Despite her injury issues this year, Thompson was the Jamaican 100-meter national champion.
