Deer Creek Collects First Titles With Class 6A Sweep By Mary Albl of DyeStat It was an historic afternoon for the Deek Creek High cross country program at the Oklahoma state cross country championships on Saturday. At Edmond Santa Fe High School, the Deer Creek boys and girls cross country teams ran to the programs first Class 6A state titles. “It's so fitting for both of these groups,” head coach David Riden told newsok.com. “They work so hard and they probably get the least attention of any of the sports at school and here they are winning the first two 6A titles for Deer Creek.” The Deer Creek boys were paced by senior Steven Clark’s second-place finish in 16 minutes, 22.9 seconds. He was a close runner-up to winner, Gabe Simonsen, a sophomore of Mustang, who won the 5,000 race in 16:22.2. Deer Creek placed three in the top 10 and four in the top 18. For the Deer Creek girls, the Antlers edged out Owasso, 87-92. Deer Creek had four runners finish in the top 25. Norman senior Sophia Maag won the race in 18:49.9. Led by senior Blake Cope’s third place finish (16:42.6), the Piedmont boys had a banner day, winning the 5A team title with an impressive 28 points. Piedmont placed four runners in the top nine and five in the top 15. Individually, junior Christian Arenivar of Santa Fe South Charter won the race in 16:24.9. The Bishop Kelley girls defended their title, scoring 33 points as freshman Ella Eureste led the way, winning the race in 19:40.6. 4A-2A, Oct. 20, Gordon Cooper Technology Center, Shawnee The 4A boys title on Oct. 20, was claimed by Seminole, as senior Richard Bolt (17:01) finished runner-up. Sophomore Miguel Duran of Madill won the race in 16:47.4, he was the only runner under 17 minutes. In the girls 4A race, Kingfisher placed four in the top 14 to score 86 points and edge out Plainview (92 points). In 3A action, it was all Marietta as the boys and girls swept the meet and senior Zane Nutter claimed the the boys individual title in 17:05.3. In 2A, the Mooreland boys dominated with 55 points, going 2-3. Boise City senior Colten Brown won the race in 16:15.9. On the girls side, Boise City claimed the 2A title once again, scoring 78 points to beat Hooker (84 points).
