Brooke Rauber, Athing Mu Earn Performance of the Week Honors - 1/21/20Published by
High Schoolers Earn Readers' and Editors' Choice AwardsTrack and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection. Readers’ Choice: Brooke RauberWith 46.62 percent of the vote, Brooke Rauber won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Athing Mu with her second-place tally of 18.15 percent. The Tully NY junior stepped up in distance as she traveled across the country to San Diego to race 6K at the USATF Cross Country Championships. Rauber dominated the field of high school athletes and college freshmen, pulling away to win the junior race for her first national title. Rauber went to the front of the race from the gun and slowly pulled away from her competitors. The course consisted of three 2K loops in Mission Bay Park. She held a one-second lead after the first loop. That lead grew to three seconds over the second loop. Breaking the competition over the final loop, Rauber pulled away to win by 37 seconds in 22:11. St. Mary's freshman Rayna Stanziano finished second in 22:48. Watch the race on USATF.TV. Rauber will return to her indoor season in New York. She has already set indoor personal bests this season over 1,000 and 1,500 meters. Watch Rauber's post-race interview on USATF.TV. Editors’ Choice: Athing MuThe high school senior who runs for the Trenton Track Club in New Jersey continued to show why she is one of the top middle-distance athletes in the country at the VA Showcase. Competing in both the 300 and 500 meters, Mu added her name to the record books. Her 300-meter win in 37.36 makes her the third fastest prep runner of all-time. However, Mu's performance in the 500 meters is where she shined. She won the race in 1:10.22, breaking the high school record of 1:10.30. That mark belonged to Chanelle Price since 2008. Mu now ranks on the prep indoor all-time lists in the 300, 400, 500, 600 and 800 meters. Her 600-meter time of 1:23.57 from last year is not only the high school record, but also the American record. Despite Mu's success, she still has a lot of her senior year remaining to improve before she heads off to Texas A&M next fall for college. More news |
