Olympic Champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn Powers Through Headwind For World-Leading 100m Hurdles Time Of 12.67; Grant Holloway Declines To Compete

Unusually high winds blowing in the faces of the athletes in the sprint races added an unplanned variable Saturday to the USATF Bermuda Games.

The televised meet on a touristy island in the Atlantic Ocean brought a chance to bring world renowned athletes to the small nation and showcase the Bermuda's natural beauty.

On the track, some of the best athletes in the world ran some of the slowest times of their professional careers, putting the emphasis on racing.

Puerto Rico's Jasmine Camacho-Quinn ran a 12.67-second 100-meter hurdles time into a -2.5 meters-per-second headwind.

In the men's 100-meter final, the wind reading was -5.6, which is significant. Canada's Jerome Blake got through it in 10.38 seconds, followed by Americans Erriyon Knigton and Noah Lyles in 10.39. The first of two prelim races was run against -5.9 m/s.

The conditions caused Grant Holloway to pull out of the 110-meter hurdles, after he called on the meet organizers to flip the track and permit the athletes to race in the same direction as the wind. He was one of 11 athletes entered in the meet who did not compete.

In his absence, Shane Brathwaite of Barbados won the race in 13.78 in a -3.8 headwind.

Teahna Daniels (11.45) and Gabby Thomas (11.49) of the U.S. were the only women to break 11.50 in the 100 meters against a -5.2 headwind.

In the 200s, winners Steven Gardiner and Anthonique Strachan, both of the Bahamas, didn't get much relief. Gardiner ran 20.79 into a -4.7 wind and Strachan managed 23.24 into a -5.0.

Shericka Jackson of Jamaica won the women's 400 meters in 51.40 seconds. Americans Lynna Irby and Wadeline Jonathas did not start.

Kirani James of Grenada ran 45.63 to win the men's 400.

World indoor champion Ajee' Wilson of the U.S. won the women's 800 meters in 2:03.09.

Kamar Etiang of Kenya ran out to a big lead and then held on at the end of the men's 1,500 meters with a winning time of 3:45.26.

Shiann Salmon from Jamaica ran 55.35 to win the women's 400-meter hurdles.

American Quanesha Burks got the advantage of a +3.6 wind to win the long jump with 22-2.50 (6.77m) as her winning mark.

Chris Benard coasted on a +5.0 win to win the men's triple jump with 54-4.50.
