Athletes Gearing Up For Postseason With State Meet A Month Away

By Todd Grasley of DyeStat

April is the start of the postseason in the Sunshine State and for many individuals and teams it has already started with conference championships or final tune-ups.

Nease senior and University of Oregon signee Rheinhardt Harrison continued his torrid pace in the distance events. One week after running a US#5 1:49.25 for 800 meters at a small local meet, Harrison clocked a 4:14.93 mile at the Bolles Mile Showcase.

The girls field at Bolles featured Cambridge Christian teammates Mary Ellen Eudaly (University of Arkansas signee) and Caroline Lehman (Notre Dame commit) going head to head with Bolles junior and 2A cross country champion Jillian Candelino. All three produced sub-5 efforts, with Eudaly crossing the line first in 4:54.66, followed by Lehman (4:56.58), and Candelino (4:59.07)

While North Florida distance events were the talk of the weekend, it was the sprinters in South Florida who stole the show.

Cynteria James of Miami Southridge is setting the track aflame. James won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.60, just shy of her personal best of 11.59 and pulled off the sweep with a US#3 200 time of 23.48 into a -0.4 m/s wind at the GMAC Championships.

Miami Northwestern's Jamari Sharpe won the boys 100 in 10.41, while Mekhi Gammons of Hialeah-Miami Lakes secured wins in the 200 meters and 400 meters with times of 21.23 and 47.56.

The boys 800 meters might have been the most exciting race of the night at the GMAC Championships with a photo finish needed to determine the order between Daniel Jean-Charles of Miami Northwestern, who won in 1:55.17, Marc Dabby of Christopher Columbus (1:55.87) and Devin Jones of Miami Northwestern (1:55.89).

Two new state leaders came from Seth Stockton of Columbia and Connor Wetherington of Santa Fe High. Stockton jumped 47-6.50 (14.49m) to win the triple jump at the Oak Hall Mini Meet, while Wethertingon threw the javelin 193-2 (58.87m) at the Alachua County Championships, currently ninth best in the nation.
