Kentucky All-American Chloe Abbott, a NACAC U-23 silver and bronze medalist for the United States, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss Juneteenth and how the official Texas state holiday and unofficial American holiday acknowledging the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African-Americans in the Confederacy has taken on more significance this year as a result of the focus on "Black Lives Matter" in our country. Abbott shares how enlightened voices, whether it's through spoken word or singing, are important now more than ever to bring greater awareness to the issues of racial and social inequality in our society. She also examines the platform athletes have and how activism can contribute to significant change and reform, especially through protests and voting. Abbott speaks about how the leadership of Kentucky coaches Lonnie Greene and Tim Hall, along with academic advisor and former athlete Passion Richardson, have impacted her and the Wildcats' program during such a unique time in their careers. She revisits the decision to return to Kentucky for the 2020-21 school year and having the chance to compete again for the Wildcats, in addition to the opportunity to race at the U.S. Olympic Trials at the renovated Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Abbott also looks at the Name, Image and Likeness legislation that is expected to be passed by the NCAA next year, and how she hopes to expand her brand, both on and off the track, including her career passions of singing, recording music and acting. In recognition of Juneteenth, Abbott sings a famous spiritual "Marchin' to the Freedom Land" for DyeStat and RunnerSpace.
