Reigning Olympic women's pole vault gold medalist and 2017 World Outdoor champion Katerina Stefanidi of Greece joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss not only her participation and victory May 16 in the Ultimate Garden Clash event, but the upcoming challenge of competing virtually again July 9 in California as part of the Inspiration Games against Sandi Morris and Angelica Bengtsson. Stefanidi reflects on vaulting into September for the second year in a row, and capturing a bronze medal at the World Outdoor Championships in Doha, Qatar. She also shares her rehabilitation and recovery from a heel injury that resulted in no competition during the winter indoor season. Stefanidi revisits being quarantined with her husband and coach Mitch Krier, along with her entire family, in Greece during the Coronavirus pandemic before competing in the Ultimate Garden Clash. She examines a potential timed showdown in the future with men's winners Armand "Mondo" Duplantis and Renaud Lavillenie, who brought the idea of virtual competition and the Ultimate Garden Clash to World Athletics. Stefanidi expresses her appreciation for Lausanne showcasing both women's and men's pole vault simultaneously on separate runways Sept. 2 in the city's shopping center as part of the Wanda Diamond League meeting. She also talks about her training apparatus at their home in Ohio, as well as a lot Stefanidi and Krier have purchased in Colorado, which they hope to complete construction on a training facility in the future. Stefanidi looks ahead to four consecutive years of global championships on the calendar and the possibility of challenging the world record before the conclusion of her career.
