Kentucky sophomore Alexis Holmes, the reigning Southeastern Conference indoor 400-meter champion and member of the World U-20 4x400-meter relay record 3:24.04 achieved by the United States at last year's Pan American U-20 Championships in Costa Rica, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her decision to pursue an academic minor in African-American studies and her roles within the Diversity Committee and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at the university. Holmes reflects on her grandfather being part of the Black Panther Movement and the family discussions that have taken place both recently and throughout her life about racial inequality and injustice, whether she has been living in Connecticut, Pennsylvania or Kentucky. She also stresses the importance of voting during the upcoming elections in our country as a means to create meaningful change and reform, especially in the African-American community. Holmes expresses her appreciation for the leadership demonstrated by Kentucky coaches Lonnie Greene, Tim Hall and the rest of the Wildcats' support staff, not only during the Coronavirus pandemic, but especially when acknowledging the significance of "Black Lives Matter" within the track and field program and in the entire Lexington community. She talks about the direction of the Kentucky program entering 2021 and the benefit of having several veteran student-athletes returning to compete next year. Holmes also examines her future, both with the Wildcats and competing for the U.S., and her preparation for next year's Olympic Trials, along with the upcoming four-year cycle that includes two Olympic Games and a pair of World Outdoor Championships. Holmes also shares how she has stayed consistent with her training regimen, despite stay-at-home orders, regularly posting workout videos on her social media.
