Reigning USATF 15 km champion and 2018 NACAC 10,000-meter gold medalist Marielle Hall, representing Bowerman Track Club, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the June 2 article she authored for Runner's World magazine entitled, "Racing to Stay Alive as a Black Runner."  Hall, also the 2014 NCAA Division 1 outdoor 5,000-meter champion at Texas, shares how she came to write the piece following a conversation with Runner's World journalist Sarah Lorge Butler and the personal experiences, both growing up and more recently following the death of Ahmaud Arbery, that helped frame her narrative. Hall revisits the conversations she has had Bowerman Track Club teammates, including fellow Black athletes Lopez Lomong of the U.S. and Mohammed Ahmed of Canada, in addition to other training partners since the article was published, and examines how important dialogue and conversation are during this period to help promote more education and awareness when it comes to the Black Lives Matter protests, marches and rallies ongoing throughout the country. Hall also speaks about how the running community has an opportunity to help promote meaningful change and reform, in addition to athletes using their platforms to also encourage voting in upcoming elections. She also shares details surrounding her partnership with RUNGRLco and the platform they have created entitled "The Relay" which spotlights Black women in distance running. Hall reflects on her eighth-place finish in the 10,000 final at last year's World Championships in Doha, Qatar, and her personal-best 31:05.71 effort that elevated her to the No. 6 performer in U.S. history. She also looks back at the successful Bowerman mini-meet that was the outdoor season opener for the group following altitude training in Park City, Utah, and how that has sparked momentum for the team for the rest of the summer and heading toward the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials.
