New Balance professional athlete Gabby Thomas, the collegiate indoor 200-meter record holder and 2018 NCAA Division 1 indoor champion during her career at Harvard, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her pursuing a Master's degree in public health at the University of Texas, in addition to training and working in Austin, where she is contributing her time to Sedera, a Medical Cost Sharing Community in an effort to provide more accessible and equitable healthcare to minorities. Thomas examines the "Black Lives Matter" platform and how it connects to racial injustice and inequality for African-Americans throughout history in the medical field and with regard to healthcare availability and benefits, in addition to education, gender and wage discrimination. She also talks about the importance of athletes holding sponsors, agencies and management groups accountable for supporting Black and African-American competitors, in addition to the impact that activism and advocacy in their own communities can promote change and reform. Thomas also shares how important it is for the track and field community to support its own African-American athletes and coaches, especially entering an Olympic year where the U.S. needs to showcase a unified presence both during and outside competition. She emphasizes the importance of voting, both in primary and national elections, and holding elected officials accountable in order for the momentum created by protests, marches and rallies to sustain. Thomas also expresses her pride surrounding Harvard being one of the universities suing the federal government in an attempt to block the potential deportation of international students whose schools are offering online-only instruction in the coming school year. She also reflects on training since her lone race in January in Boston and the potential opportunities to compete this year, along with preparation for the 2021 Olympic Trials.
