Three-time U.S. Olympian and five-time World Championships qualifier Shannon Rowbury, a Nike athlete who secured gold in the distance medley relay at the World Relays and earned bronze medals at the World Outdoor Championships and World Indoor Championships, joined DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her debut Jan. 8 as a broadcaster and reporter for USATF.TV at the USATF Cross Country Championships, presented by Toyota, in San Diego. Rowbury shares how meaningful it is to contribute to the sport as an ambassador in new roles during her pregnancy, with she and husband Pablo expecting a boy in April. She also examines how important it is to have female athletes in the roles of broadcasters and analysts in the track and field community to share their insight and perspective at championship events. Rowbury explains how she is also remaining connected with the sport through her work with start-up company Parity as the Director of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), and the legends series the group is working on this year, highlighted by Jackie Joyner-Kersee. She also revisits her experiences creating her own NFT last year and how significant it is for female athletes to have that presence in the NFT technology marketplace. Rowbury also expresses gratitude for the improvements made by the USATF Foundation Maternity Fund to pregnant and postpartum mothers who are still active athletes, and how the new Maternity Grant program will help Molly Huddle, Ce'Aira Brown, Elvin Kibet and Rowbury this year. She shares how much was learned following the birth in 2018 of her daughter Sienna as it relates to Rowbury returning to training and the injuries she has endured and recovered from since. Rowbury confirms that Nike has extended her contract for this year, with June marking the 15-year anniversary since signed with the company as a professional athlete, and looks forward to competing during the fall schedule, with her sights set on the USATF Club Cross Country Championships in December, which are scheduled to be held for the first time since 2015 in San Francisco, where she attended high school at Sacred Heart Prep, before competing collegiately for Duke. She also speaks about the recently named Union Athletics Club training group under the guidance of Pete Julian and how valuable the relationships with her teammates, along with the coaches and sports medicine staff, have been in recent years. The group is preparing to showcase its talents Feb. 11 during the Lilac Grand Prix at the new Podium indoor facility in Spokane, Wash., following a strong showing at the Ted Nelson Invitational at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
