Roughly 1200 athletes from various groups across the nation will take to the course at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee Saturday for the AAU Cross Country National Championship. NEWS RELEASE Nation’s top young runners compete in AAU cross country championships TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Nov. 30, 2016) – Young athletes with Tallahassee running clubs the Crusaders and Panhandle Express are among 100 teams and 1,025 runners competing here Saturday in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Cross Country National Championships at Leon County's Apalachee Regional Park Runners age 5 to 18 will compete on courses ranging from 1k to 5K. Nearly 30 states and territories, including Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, are represented by teams and individual competitors from across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. Results of the championship races will be posted at this AAU link at the conclusion of each race. Also, AAU is hosting an "AAU Cares Toy Drive" to benefit pediatric patients at Tallahassee Memorial Children's Center. Teams donating the most toys will win awards. Apalachee Regional Park wraps up its busiest cross country season this month, having hosted 10 national, regional and state championships since October. The 140-acre park was honored by the Florida Sports Foundation as the 2016 Sports Venue of the Year in mid-size markets. The final meet of the season here, on Dec. 10, is the USA Track & Field (USATF) National Club Cross Country Championships. More than 1,000 competitors from around the nation are expected to compete in masters and open races for men and women.
