Diriba returns to the race as the defending champion, but she will face a stiff test from other women in the field. Most notable is Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia, who has found success on the track, on grass and now also on the roads. She has run 30:38 for 10K and she won the RAK Half Marathon earlier this year, in her debut, running 1:05:45.

Other potential contenders in the women's race include Mary Munanu and Monicah Ngige, both from Kenya, as well as Risper Gesabwa of Mexico.

The men's race features last year's runner-up in Kimeli. He has run nearly a minute faster than anyone else in the field, based on his 27:11 in this race in 2018. The man who beat him, Rhonex Kipruto, set the course record at 27:08.

Kimeli's top challengers include David Bett and Dominic Korir, both from Kenya, as well as Gabriel Geay from Tanzania.

The race has a prize purse of at least $57,000 for the top athletes, including $10,000 going to the winners. Should the men's or women's winner break the course records, 27:08 for men and 30:44 for the women, the winner will be awarded an additional $30,000.

The UAE Healthy Kidney 10K will be aired live on USATF.TV on Sunday morning.
