Years from now, the fact that Houston Strake Jesuit came up two points short of the Class 6A boys state title at the UIL State Championships will likely be forgotten.

What won't is the display of athleticism that senior Matthew Boling presented to a roaring crowd and a horde of media Saturday.

Boling ran a wind-legal 10.13 seconds to win the 100 meters. That ties the 33-year-old Texas state record of Derrick Florence from Galveston's Ball High. It's also a NFHS record. And it's a US#1 and possibly superior to his wind-aided 9.98 from two weeks ago.

After a weather delay, Boling returned to the track and won the long jump in front of a standing crowd of spectators, logging a best of 25 feet, 4.50 inches (wind-aided).

In the 4x400 to close the meet, Boling took the baton with a seemingly insurmountable deficit, but his churning legs carried him to a 44.75-second anchor split and he overtook DeSoto's Chris Ford for the win. Strake Jesuit ran 3:10.56 for a US#1. DeSoto ran 3:11.13.

Boling also charged past opponents in the 4x100, but that relay was disqualified for a pass outside the exchange zone. That's the race that cost the team the title.

Klein Forest scored 42 points to Strake Jesuit's 40.

DeSoto's girls lowered their own national high school record in the 4x100 relay to 44.24 seconds with a lineup of JaEra Griffin, Jayla Hollis, Taylor Armstrong and Rosaline Effiong

Effiong also ran on the 4x400, which also won, in 3:39.79.

Jasmine Moore closed her incredible career at the Texas state meet by breaking the meet record in the triple jump with a US No. 3 all-time mark of 44-10. That's less than two inches off the national record.

Moore also won the long jump with 20-7.

Sophomore Brynn Brown from Denton Guyer had a big day, winning 6A titles in the 3,200 meters (meet record 10:09.91) and 1,600 meters (4:48.37).

Junior Ryan Schoppe of LaPorte won the 6A boys 3,200 in 8:52.73.  Later, he got edged out by junior Cole Lindhorst of Katy Tompkins, 4:07.41 to 4:07.47, in the 1,600-meter final.
