Parker Stinson and Emma Bates Win USATF 25 km ChampionshipsBy Adam Kopet of DyeStat Parker Stinson and Emma Bates won the USATF 25 km Championships Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich. Stinson dominated the race from the start to break the American record in a time of 1:13:47. He bettered the existing record of 1:14:18, held by Christo Landry since 2014. It was Stinson’s first national title. After building a lead of 20 second by 10K, Stinson continued to build the margin until the finish. Scott Smith finished second in 1:15:05. Kiya Dandena was third in 1:15:38. Bates had company for the first eight miles. Sara Hall, the runner-up at last week’s USATF Half Marathon Championships, went with Bates from the early going but eventually fell off the pace. It was Hall’s third race in four weeks, including the Boston Marathon last month. Bates went on to win in 1:23:55 to Hall’s 1:25:33. Molly Bookmyer was third in 1:27:27. The race featured an equalizer bonus. Despite Stinson’s record performance, it was not enough to overcome the 11-minute head start of Bates. Grand Prix BernGeoffrey Kamworor of Kenya and Meseret Gezahegn Merine of Ethiopia won the Grand Prix Bern, a 10-mile race in Switzerland. Kamworor dominated the men’s race, winning in a course record 44:57. That places him sixth on the all-time performer list. Merine won the women’s race in 57:47. NYRR Japan RunMary Cain, making a triumphant return to the running scene, and Girma Bekele of Ethiopia won the NYRR Japan Run, a 4-mile race in New York City’s Central Park. Cain, a New York native, won the women’s race in 21:49. It was her first race in more than two years. Bekele won the men’s race in 19:32.
