Who's High School Track Apparel Would You Wear?Published by
By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Just in time for Halloween ... What if you were thinking about dressing up as a member of your favorite cross country (or track) team? That could be a thing, right? You've already got a dozen meet T-shirts, a couple of backpacks that mark you as a New Balance Nationals participant, and you follow Sydney McLaughlin and Drew Hunter's training group (@TinmanElite) on Instagram. So what's next? If you were going to wear another high school's colors (not your own), who would it be? Theoretically, you can find this stuff on your own with a Google search. It's not always easy to find, though, and the best way to obtain one of the thousands of team shirts out there is to know someone who's got an extra. But if you let your mind wander a moment, you might see something here you like. And you might make the fashion statement to the world that correlates to something, or someone, you care about. Here are some examples. Web sites like THIS ONE are one place to look.
Name Brand Swag Fayetteville-Manlius Cross Country Feel like a champion in Hornets green from F-M, the home of the 11-time girls Nike Cross Nationals champions.
Bullis If sprints, hurdles and relays are your thing, no one is crushing it like the Bullis School MD.
Loudoun Valley The Vikings of Loudoun Valley is the home of the two-time defending national champion boys cross country team.
Great Oak This California powerhouse has become a name brand in the last decade. For a runner, "GO" is a fortunate abbreviation.
Long Beach Poly This legendary track school has decades of heritage behind it, from the California state meet to the Penn Relays.
Union Catholic Sydney McLaughlin repped these colors for four glorious years and became a star.
North Rockland Katelyn Tuohy could leave high school as the girls distance running GOAT. In fact, a mascot change here to the North Rockland Goats might not be a bad idea.
Retro Marshfield The problem with the newer Mashfield gear is that isn't soaked in rain and splattered in mud, the way Steve Prefontaine would have worn it.
Marblehead Shalane Flanagan, running legend, retired a week ago. She rose to prominence as a Marblehead Magician, which is a cool mascot.
Current Stars Alma Maters Crested Butte Raised in the Rockies, Emma Coburn is one of the world's greatest steeplechasers.
Benjamin Cardozo When you wear the swag of Cardozo, you are wearing the high school colors of Dalilah Muhammad, who broke the 400-meter hurdles world record TWICE this year.
Vista Murietta Michael Norman wasn't able to finish the season on a high note, but he's become one of the most popular U.S. track and field athletes just three years out of high school.
Grassfield Grant Holloway is the world champion in the hurdles. In high school, he was a sprinter, hurdler, high jumper and long jumper.
T.C. Williams Noah Lyles is the world champ in the 200 meters and together with his brother, Josephus, put T.C. Williams into the headlines.
Kenowa Hills Donavan Brazier ran 1:48.07 in the 800 meters as a senior in high school. Four years later he is the American record holder and world champ.
Neptune Ajee' Wilson's alma mater is nicknamed the Scarlet Fliers.
Mood Happy I'm sure not everyone is happy all the time at Happy High School in Texas. But why not announce it to the world on your long runs when you're feeling it?
Halloween Tombstone For after those long runs, when you feel dead inside. This is an instance where the name of the school is far superior to the name of the mascot (Yellow Jackets).
Sleepy Hollow The Horsemen, of course, from New York, are not always "Headless," but still cool.
New Braunfels I'm not aware of another school that uses "Unicorns" for a mascot. But when Paige Hofstad of New Braunfels TX placed second to Allie Ostrander at the 2014 Nike Cross Nationals, we found out.
Lead- Deadwood Whether your legs feel like "Lead" or "Dead wood" after a workout, either one works for the Gold Diggers of South Dakota.
Salem Yes, Salem High of Massachusetts goes by the Witches. As it should.
Richland The Richland Bombers, of Washington, get their name from the nearby (decomissoned) nuclear production complex called Hanford. For some reason, "Bombers" is also oddly satisfying on a cross country singlet.
Yuma The oldest high school in Arizona was once housed in the (closed) territorial prison, with classes in cell blocks. After a new school building was erected, Yuma clung to its history. So yes, theoretically there are "Criminals Cross Country" shirts somewhere. And they are probably awesome.
Regrettably, Orofino High in Idaho does not field a cross country team. But if it did, the singlets would be unique.
